Social media inquiry launched

The government's Attorney General is considering whether tougher penalties are needed to stop people jeopardising criminal trials by posting comments on social media.

Jeremy Wright, the Conservative MP for Kenilworth and Southam, has asked judges, lawyers, police and victims' groups to submit evidence about their experience of legal cases, rulings and investigations being affected by online messages in England and Wales.

He said there was already some evidence that comments - on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter - had undermined legal proceedings.

The Attorney General Jeremy Wright acknowledged the election campaign had been "very unusual, for all sorts of reasons".

He held on to the seat of Kenilworth and Southam for the Conservatives - albeit with a slightly reduced majority.

During his acceptance speech he paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the terror attacks in Manchester and London, saying some citizens had "lost a lot more than an election" during the campaign.
