Hornchurch & Upminster: Conservative hold

Julia Lopez has been re-elected MP for Hornchurch & Upminster, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with an increased majority.

The MP beat Labour's Tele Lawal by 23,308 votes. This was more than Ms Lopez's 17,723 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

Thomas Clarke of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Green Party's Peter Caton came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 2.5 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 54,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Two of the five candidates, Peter Caton (Green) and David Furness (British National Party) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.
