Guildford: Conservative hold

Angela Richardson has been elected MP for Guildford, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with a significantly decreased majority.

The new MP beat Liberal Democrat Zoe Franklin by 3,337 votes. This was less than a quarter of Anne Milton’s 17,040 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

Ann Milton was removed from the parliamentary Conservative Party in September after rebelling against the government over Brexit. She decided to stand as an independent, but came fourth, behind Anne Rouse of the Labour Party, who came third.

Voter turnout was up by 1.7 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 59,000 people, roughly three-quarters of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

One of the five candidates, John Morris (The Peace Party) lost his £500 deposit after failing to win 5% of the vote.
