Ed Miliband to join review of Labour's election failure

Doncaster North MP and ex-Labour leader Ed Miliband will sit on a panel of party figures to review the party's general election failure, it's been confirmed.

Labour Together, which describes itself as a network of activists from all traditions, is setting up a commission to "map out a route back to power".

It says the panel will view attempts to pin the blame on a single cause, such as Brexit or Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, as simplistic and wrong.

Members, focus groups in heartlands and defeated candidates will get a say.

Former shadow education secretary Lucy Powell will spearhead the review, alongside Mr Miliband and Birmingham Ladywood MP Shabana Mahmood.

Doncaster North: Labour hold

Ed Miliband has been re-elected as the MP for Doncaster North, with a significantly decreased majority.

The Labour candidate beat Conservative Katrina Sale by 2,370 votes, less than half the majority at the 2017 election.

Andy Stewart of the Brexit Party came third and Liberal Democrat Joe Otten came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 2.2 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 41,000 people, 56.2% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Six of the nine candidates lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

It's been confirmed that the route of HS2 through South Yorkshire will be announced on Monday.

The BBC understands that the line is likely to follow the M18, but many groups are opposed to this idea.

Labour's Ed Miliband is the MP for Doncaster North and told me he's far from satisfied about the project:

Watch: South Yorkshire's Labour winners react to victories

South Yorkshire is now a sea of red after former Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg lost his Sheffield Hallam seat to Labour.

The other 13 South Yorkshire seats remained with Jeremy Corbyn's party, and the successful candidates have been speaking about their wins.

Sarah Champion, who remains MP for Rotherham after increasing her majority by 3.9%, had this to say following her re-election:

The Barnsley East constituency was always going to have a new MP after Michael Dugher announced he wouldn't seek re-election.

The successful candidate there was Labour's Stephanie Peacock, who gave this reaction to her victory:
