Carlisle MP Stevenson says Patel was right to go

The Carlisle MP John Stevenson says the International Development secretary Priti Patel was right to resign, even if it made her the second minister to step down in a week.

Some MPs have said her replacement should be a Brexiteer, to maintain the number of cabinet members supporting Britain leaving the EU.

But Mr Stevenson said the Prime Minister, Theresa May, should appoint the best person for that particular job.

When you're in that position, you've got to make sure you follow the correct protocols, she didn't, and it's absolutely correct that she leaves the government.

It's the important criteria, that we get the best people at the top of government."

For many years with successive governments of all colours, our country has become dominated by one city.

Carlisle MP says Foreign Secretary's future 'is decision for PM'

BBC Radio Cumbria

The Conservative MP for Carlisle John Stevenson says that only Theresa May's opinion matters when it comes to Boris Johnson's future in the government.

The Foreign Secretary is due to address the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester later.

It comes after he's been forced to deny suggestions that he was on the verge of resigning because of cabinet tensions over Britain's exit from the European Union and charges that he'd been undermining the Prime Minister.

At the end of the day, it's up to Theresa May who is in her government. He is a big beast, he is a character. I don't always agree with his views - particularly on aspects of Brexit but nevertheless he does make a contribution to political debate."

John Stevenson, the Conservative MP for Carlisle, says the government is currently spending about £13bn a year on overseas development, and should cut the payments while there's still a budget deficit.

The government says UK aid spending has brought about many positive developments, and helps stabilise areas of the world that could otherwise form a threat.

Stevenson: Brexit was and is the main business

The Carlisle Conservative MP John Stevenson says the Conservatives should have made more of their stance over Brexit.

Mr Stevenson, who held his seat with a reduced majority, said negotiating a departure from the EU would remain the main task for any incoming government.

At the end of the day it is the most important thing facing this country and the government when it is formed will have to deal with how we negotiate with our European partners."
