Bootle: Labour hold

Shadow chief secretary to the Treasury Peter Dowd has been re-elected as the MP for Bootle.

The Labour candidate beat Conservative Tarsilo Onuluk by 34,556 votes, 1,644 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

Kim Knight of the Brexit Party came third and Liberal Democrat Rebecca Hanson came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 3.3 percentage points since the last general election.

More than 49,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Two of the five candidates, Rebecca Hanson (Liberal Democrat) and Mike Carter (Green) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

RESULT: Labour retains Bootle

Peter Dowd has retained Bootle for the Labour Party, albeit with a slightly reduced majority.

The seat was never up for grabs, given that he won in 2017 by 36,200 votes.

Tonight he won by 34,556.
