Blaydon: Labour hold

Liz Twist has been re-elected as the MP for Blaydon, with a decreased majority.

The Labour candidate beat Conservative Adrian Pepper by 5,531 votes, less than half the majority at the 2017 election.

Michael Robinson of the Brexit Party came third and Liberal Democrat Vicky Anderson came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 2.9 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 46,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Four of the eight candidates, Diane Cadman (Green), Kathy King (Liberal Party), Lisabela Marschild (Space Navies Party) and Lee Garrett (independent) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

Blaydon will not contest general election

Dave Anderson, the MP for Blaydon, has announced he will not stand as a candidate in the general election on 8 June.

The Labour man, who has represented the area for 12 years, said: "I have reluctantly decided that for reasons of health, age and my family's needs, I cannot commit to another five years in Parliament".

Anderson, 63, is also Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
