Man 'humbled' by 100th birthday card response

Bert Vincent

A man has received more than 700 cards after an appeal for people to mark his 100th birthday. Bert Vincent faced celebrating his centenary isolated from his family at a care home in Barnsley due to the coronavirus lockdown. Now cards have arrived from around the world, including messages from the Queen and the prime minister.

The World War Two veteran said he was left "humbled" by the response.

Barnsley East: Labour hold

Stephanie Peacock has been re-elected as the MP for Barnsley East, with a significantly decreased majority.

The Labour candidate beat the Brexit Party's Jim Ferguson by 3,217 votes, less than half the majority at the 2017 election.

Adam Gregg of the Conservative Party came third and Liberal Democrat Sophie Thornton came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 4.1 percentage points since the last general election.

More than 38,000 people, 54.8% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Two of the five candidates, Sophie Thornton (Liberal Democrat) and Richard Trotman (Green) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

Labour's Stephanie Peacock has said she will fight for working people after she was re-elected as MP for Barnsley East.

Speaking on the podium after her result was announced, she said: "It is not a good night for my party.

"The Labour Party was formed to fight for working people and I will do everything I can to return to doing just that."

Meanwhile, Brexit Party candidate Jim Ferguson secured second spot ahead of Adam Gregg for the Conservatives.
