Ben Chapple

BBC News Online

Ynys Mon, also known as Anglesey, off the coast of northwest mainland Wales has been named the preferred bidder for the International Island Games in 2025.

The group's AGM was held in Gibraltar while athletes were competing in the 2019 Island Games.

An inspection team will visit Ynys Mon later this year and report back in 2020 when a final decision on host island is due to be made.

If approved, Ynys Mon will be the 12th member island to host the event.

The executive committee also named the Isle of Man, which hosted in 2001 and the inaugural 1985 games, as the preferred bidder for the 2027 Games.

Island Games 2019: An afternoon of cycling

Reporter, BBC Radio Guernsey

After a cooler start to the morning, the sun has broken through the clouds in Gibraltar and it’s set to be an exciting afternoon on two wheels as the women’s individual road race gets under way.

For Guernsey, Karina Bowie, Hannah Brehaut, Danielle Hanley, Madeline Wilson and Jamie Lee Wright take centre stage for the Sarnians, whilst Louise Woolrich, Florence Cox, Rebecca Catley and Emily Bridson are competing for Jersey.

It’s a packed field for what’s expected to be one of the events of the afternoon and as the shadow of the rock bears down on the cyclists, the chance of bringing home more gold to the Channel Islands is of course the ultimate goal.

About 170 Guernsey athletes are heading off to Gibraltar ahead of the 2019 Island Games.

Chairman of the Guernsey Island Games Association Brian Allen says finishing in the top six would be an excellent result, but that it's about more than just medals.

"Sometimes it's not been the medal count that's made it a successful games, it's been about developing stars coming through." he added.

Mr Allen said that a bronze medal won by a 14-year-old girl in 2017 was "better than many golds".

Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man have released proposals to gradually open up the registers of who ultimately owns companies in the island, meaning the EU, businesses and eventually the general public will have some level of access over the next four years.

It took the allied powers six months to plan and successfully carry out the D-Day landings. It took Thomas Edison two years to create the light bulb. The Crown Dependencies have today set out a three-year plan to table a discussion in parliament with no commitments and no details on whether they will comply with emerging international standards on beneficial ownership transparency.
