Javid's short tenure as chancellor

Sajid Javid served only 204 days as chancellor - which means he served fewer days in office than all but one chancellor since World War Two.

The longest serving chancellor was Gordon Brown, who was in the role from 1997 to 2007 during the Labour government.

Public buildings in Bromsgrove could be heated by water pumped up from underneath the town.

Javid resignation will be 'shocking' to some

The BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg says the resignation of the Bromsgrove MP, Sajid Javid, as Chancellor "will be shocking to some people".

She says she's already heard from one Tory minister who has called the move "insane".

As a backbencher, will Mr Javid be a thorn in the prime minister’s side?

"We will have to wait and see what Sajid Javid – who ran to be Conservative leader - will decide to do on the backbenches," she says.

"It may well be the start of something, rather than the end of one man’s time in cabinet."

Javid went into No 10 'all smiles'

Vicki Young

Chief Political Correspondent

For weeks there have been lots of rumours and speculation about a falling out between the prime minister's chief advisor Dominic Cummings and Sajid Javid (along with his staff).

It was clear Mr Cummings wanted to make changes to Whitehall, but although some of those changes were said to have gone away, he still wanted to make sure that No 10 was in control of what was going on at the Treasury.

And he didn't feel that was happening.

What seems to have happened today is Sajid Javid went in, all smiles, and with no-one predicting he wasn't going to come out as chancellor.

But that didn't happen.

We are hearing the now-former chancellor was asked to change the way his office worked, including getting rid of some of his own advisors, but he seems to have refused and instead left his position.

When people were talking about possible cabinet causalities yesterday, Mr Javid was not on the list.

But if you look at the overall picture of what has happened in recent months, given the briefings against Mr Javid, the resignation may not be disappointing to some inside No 10.

Javid out: 'Quite extraordinary'

Our political editor Laura Kuenssberg says Sajid Javid has decided that rather than obey the PM to sack his advisory team, he has turned down the second most important job.

Rishi Sunak has now been appointed chancellor in his place.

Mr Javid was meant to be staying on despite the unhappiness between his team and Downing Street, our political editor says.

It is quite an extraordinary thing to happen at this stage of a new government.

He was meant to be delivering a budget in four weeks' time.

Javid resignation 'followed row with Dominic Cummings'

Sajid Javid's resignation follows rumours of tensions between Mr Javid and the prime minister's senior adviser Dominic Cummings.

"He has turned down the job of chancellor of the Exchequer," a source close to Mr Javid said.

"The prime minister said he had to fire all his special advisers and replace them with Number 10 special advisers to make it one team.

"The chancellor said no self-respecting minister would accept those terms."

Javid resigned over adviser row: BBC political editor

This insight from the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg could explain Sajid Javid's departure.
