Oxford's £9.7m George Street revamp shelved

Local Democracy Reporting Service

A potential £9.75mn revamp that would have changed the face of one of Oxford’s busiest streets has been shelved.

The city council said its plan to knock down 1-5 George Street and rebuild it with a plush new unit was now unaffordable.

It said it will now "go back to the drawing board" to see what it can do in the future.

The ASK Italian restaurant will be offered a longer lease to stay in 5 George Street, the council said.

Other tenants had all moved out by mid-2018. They included a dentist, a chiropodist and luggage shop Solutions.

Surgeries at Oxford hospital postponed over ventilation issues

The hospital already has four operating threatres out of action due to maintenance works.

The trust said this represented "a significant loss of theatre capacity" across its hospitals.

M40 crash pictures taken following 'miraculous' escape

Truck and car collision on M40

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has released pictures of the large scale operation on the M40 yesterday, in which a truck ended up on the central reservation and on top of a car.

No-one was seriously hurt in the collision, which happened between junctions 10 and 9 southbound at 06:30, and ended up causing long delays for much of the day.

Station manager Mike Clarke said: "Both drivers involved in this incident were extremely fortunate not to have suffered from more serious injuries.

"Miraculously, the force of the impact tore the car driver’s door off, meaning that he was freed without mechanical assistance from us.

"Due to where both vehicles came to a stop, it was necessary to reduce the number of running lanes then eventually close one carriageway altogether to recover both vehicles safely."

John Radcliffe Hospital multi-storey car park plan

An application to build a multi-storey car park at the John Radcliffe Hospital could be submitted within the next year, hospital bosses have confirmed.

It comes as nearly 3,000 people have backed a petition calling for one to be built to solve the ongoing parking problems. Patients sometimes have to queue for hours to get a space.

However Alex Hollingsworth, lead member for planning and sustainable transport at Oxford City Council, told BBC Radio Oxford "more would be needed to solve the problem in the long-term."

The JR is one of the biggest hospitals in the country, we treat more and more patients each year so we can’t grow our way out of this. We’re going to have to do something different as well, otherwise the growth in patients and staff will overtake whatever provision we put in place."
