Why has it gone wrong for Burnley?

Simon Stone

BBC Sport

What a difference a year makes...

On 13 December last year, Burnley move into the Premier League's top four. If the Clarets fail to beat Brighton this weekend, they will spend the same date of 2018 in the division's bottom three.

It is a dramatic change in fortune for Sean Dyche's side, who spent only one week in the bottom half of the table during the entirety of 2017-18 en route to securing a place in the Europa League by finishing seventh, their best performance since 1974.

With their European campaign over before September, the Clarets have won just two of 15 league games in 2018-19, with only Fulham - the team currently propping up the top-flight - having conceded more than their 32 goals.

BBC Sports takes a look at just why Sean Dyche's team is struggling this season.

Numbers at Bleasdale Church of England Primary in the Forest of Bowland have dwindled from 16 to two in five years

Pupil numbers have fallen from a recent high of 16 within the past five years.

Governors, who fear the school will no longer be economically viable, have asked Lancashire County Council to consult on its future.

A report presented to the council's cabinet revealed it was unlikely to be able to retain its "good" Ofsted rating if the number of children on its roll remained in single figures, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Rail chaos: Transport Secretary 'should take some responsibility', MPs say

In a scathing report on timetable changes, the Transport Select Committee said "genuine change" was needed to restore trust in the railways.

MPs said although Mr Grayling had not been fully informed, this could not absolve him of all responsibility.

Mr Grayling admitted mistakes had been made, telling BBC Radio 4's Today programme:

I accept responsibility for myself and my department not asking tough enough questions.

At no point did I get the information that I would have needed to intervene.
