Lab results have shown trains running in the south east are testing negative for coronavirus.

Southern, Thameslink and Great Northern's carriages were all tested over the past three weeks following treatment with a long-lasting viruscide.

Swabs were taken from areas in the train carriages frequently touched by passengers and staff such as grab rails, tables and toilet handles.

Govia Thameslink Railway's chief operating officer Steve White said: “We are carrying out a comprehensive testing regime of our trains to ensure that our customers can travel with confidence."

    Southeastern train

Southeastern is to introduce a reduced timetable from Monday in response to "the current phase of the pandemic".

The rail company said it reflected the reduction in passenger demand and the need for some frontline staff to follow personal NHS advice and to self-isolate.

It said the revised timetable would help it to run "a resilient service and help prevent short notice cancellations" should more staff be affected by the virus.

Scott Brightwell, train services director, said: “Throughout the pandemic we’ve continually monitored passenger numbers and responded with adjustments to our timetable.

"The slight reduction to services this winter will also ensure that the number of services better meets changed patterns of demand."
