Council pledges to be single-use plastic free by 2023

David Pittam

BBC News Online

Nottingham City Council has promised to be single-use plastic free by 2023.

It admitted it "will not be simple" but wants to lead by example.

The impact of single-use plastics on our environment has recently come under scrutiny as it hangs around for hundreds of years, posing a threat to wildlife.

The council plans include encouraging businesses to let people refill water bottles, promoting lunchbox use in their offices and getting rid of orange recycling plastic bags for city apartments - although they say they will make sure residents can still recycle.

One measure anyone who uses the city's public leisure centres will notice is the recent removal of plastic shoe covers.

Boots has 'room to improve' over 'skinny-shaming' ad

BBC Radio Derby

An image coach believes Nottingham-based health and beauty chain Boots has "room to improve" over a new television advert that has been criticised for "skinny-shaming".

The advert shows two curvier women whipping off their sarongs and going for a dip in the sea, despite disparaging looks from a slimmer onlooker.

The company has received a backlash on social media, with some women suggesting it was pitting different female body types against each other.

Sarah Marsden-Shreeve, an image coach from Alvaston, said she thought the advert "could have been better" and she would have liked to have seen "more variety of inclusive body types".

She added thinner people shouldn't feel "ousted" in such campaigns.

"All bodies are good bodies, no matter what shape or size," she said.

Marketing director for Boots UK and Ireland, Helen Normoyle, said the campaign was intended to celebrate "women who aren't driven by a need to be someone else's definition of 'summer-ready'."

'Britain's biggest' stickleback caught

Neil Heath

BBC News Online

As monster catches go, it was not the biggest fish ever caught - but for a stickleback it was enormous.

Mat Faulkner, from Ilkeston, was at his own fishery in Nottinghamshire when he caught the 9g (0.3 ounce) tiddler.

The fisherman believes the fish, which usually weigh about a gram, has beaten the previous national record set in 1998.

The British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee said its members will scrutinise the claim in due course.

Mr Faulkner's friend Jack Perks - who features regularly on the BBC's Springwatch programme for his freshwater fish expertise - was there at the time.

Mr Perks said: "Mat shouted me over and I looked at it and I said 'that's enormous'."

The wildlife expert said had the female been caught earlier, it would have been even heavier due to its eggs.

A 7g (0.2 ounce) stickleback caught at a lake in Cambridgeshire is currently the largest recorded stickleback.

Dad delivers daughter with help from call handler

Rob Sissons

East Midlands Today Reporter

A dad had to deliver his daughter at home while being talked through it by an ambulance call handler.

Baby Lottie was born on a kitchen floor at the family home in Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire, because her labour, a day over the due date, was so short, there wasn't time to get her mum Becca Clarke to hospital.

Dad Adam Sinnott and his mother Julie had to cut the umbilical cord with a shoelace after the ambulance call handler told them not to cut it with a knife.

Family on sofa
BBC

Mrs Clarke said: "Adam was amazing, so focused. Everyone keeps saying it's something that happens in EastEnders, not in Cotgrave."

According to the Baby Centre, one in every 200 pregnancies end in an "emergency home birth" - where the baby arrives too suddenly to get to hospital - and mostly on a second pregnancy.
