Lions new home 'threatened by Brexit'

The future of two lions due to be re-homed in Hampshire is being threatened by Brexit, the Isle of Wight Zoo's chief executive says.

Veronica Chrisp told the BBC that the former circus animals were set to move from Alicante in Spain after they were rescued.

But concerns about transportation costs and funding after Britain leaves the European Union could mean the two five-year-old brothers Vigo and Kumba may have to stay in Spain.

The zoo has started a fundraising campaign to get the lions to their new home.

Brexit 'threatening rescue of island-bound tigers'

Brexit is threatening the rescue of two lions that previously performed in a circus in Spain and are due to be rehomed in the UK, it has been claimed.

Six-year-old brothers, Kumba and Vigo, are currently being held at a rescue centre in Alicante.

"We are facing major issues with the logistics of bringing these two majestic animals to their new safe haven", said chief executive at the Isle of Wight-based zoo Veronica Chrisp.

"With all sorts of industries racing to import and export goods prior to the official Brexit, there's a very real chance that we cant find or afford a way to get Vigo and Kumba to us before 29th March."

Purpose-built accommodation was due to be constructed at the zoo but an enclosure is now being retrofitted "in the short term", the zoo said.

It has set up a crowdfuding page to raise £20,000.

No-deal Brexit 'could affect Channel Island supplies'

BBC Radio Jersey

The leaders of four councils in the UK say any delays at Portsmouth harbour as a result of a no-deal Brexit will result in interruptions to the supply of food and medical supplies to the Channel Islands.

The leaders of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton councils have written to UK Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, asking for assurance that the UK government would put in place the support needed for Portsmouth International Port.

They said 90% of Channel Islands trade came via Portsmouth and would need support to minimise delays.
