The outdated trains, many of which have been running for 35 years, were due to be taken out of use by 2020.

But, with just a few weeks of the year left, only three trains have been retired.

The much-maligned trains will continue to be retired and then scrapped over the coming months, with "a handful" remaining.

Northern, which covers the North West, North East, Midlands and Yorkshire, has said 101 brand new trains will join their fleet as part of a £600m investment.

Calderdale rail disruption 'until end of day'

Disruption to rail services in Calderdale is now expected to last "until the end of the day", according to train operator Northern.

The problems are due to Network Rail engineering works which have overrun.

There are also problems on the Rochdale-Todmorden route due to an "incident" which is expected to be dealt with by about 10:00.

Labour launches 'regional manifestos' in England

Labour has promised an "investment blitz" across England to bring "wealth, power and prosperity" to communities.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell
PA Media

The party launched regional manifestos for each part of the country on Friday, including pledges on transport, housing and jobs.

Each manifesto outlines plans for individual regions, with most of the pledges to be paid for by Labour's £250bn Green Transformation Fund - a pot of money raised through borrowing it promises to spend on projects to improve sustainability.

The pledges impacting on Yorkshire include:

  • Northern Powerhouse Rail - improving connections between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Hull, and Newcastle, and cutting journey times
  • Nine plastics remanufacture and recycling sites - one for each region

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said the announcement would "bring our country back together".

But Tory minister Jake Berry said it was "a clear distraction from Corbyn's failure to set out a Brexit plan".

Former European Tour professional Chris Hanson is one of the 2020 Pro Tour's founders.

"Obviously on the main tour there have been a few tournaments that have done it but no-one's done a full season of it.

"I think it's a great opportunity."

Yorkshire Air Ambulance withdraws Prince Andrew connection

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance service (YAA) has become the latest charity to withdraw its connection to the Duke of York.

The YAA said "staff, volunteer and donor opinion" had led to the move by its trustee board.

It follows Prince Andrew's appearance on BBC Newsnight and the controversy over his ties to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The duke opened the air ambulance base at Nostell in 2015.

For several months the duke had been facing questions over his ties to US financier Epstein, who took his own life in August while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's accusers, claimed she was forced to have sex with the prince three times.

The duke has always denied any form of sexual contact or relationship with her.

YAA said: "As a charity funded by public donations, we must seriously consider the opinions of our donors and supporters, this has been a significant factor in reaching this decision."

The University of Huddersfield has also said the prince would step down as chancellor.

Scarborough to host first Roses cricket match for 29 years

The fixture at North Marine Road will start on 14 June.

Yorkshire are also holding their four home One-Day Cup matches away from Headingley, with two at Scarborough and two at York.

York Cricket Club has been rewarded for successfully hosting a first-class match this year - the first time a County Championship match had been played at Wigginton Road since 1890.

The increased use of Scarborough and York has been brought about by an unprecedentedly busy domestic fixture list.

Headingley is also home ground to the Northern Superchargers, a franchise in the inaugural 100-ball competition, The Hundred.

The men's side, whose players include England star Ben Stokes, will start their campaign at Old Trafford against the Manchester Originals on 18 July.

The women's team, led by former England all-rounder Danielle Hazel, head to Lord's on 23 July to play London Spirit.

New appeal over Dewsbury man missing for eight days

Police searching for an 81-year-old Dewsbury man who's been missing for more than a week have issued an appeal for more people to "spread the message".

Colin Vasey
West Yorkshire Police

Hundreds of people have joined searches for great grandfather Colin Vasey and more than 10,000 have signed up to a Facebook group to share information.

Mr Vasey left his home in Dewsbury on Sunday 17 November and was last seen on CCTV by the town's minster.

He's thought to be wearing a blue fleece, grey pyjama bottoms and a dark coloured beanie hat and is described as white, about 5ft 7ins tall and of slim build.

The West Yorkshire force says despite extensive inquiries using specialist search officers, police dogs, the police helicopter, diving unit and a drone, the 81-year-old remains missing.

Det Ch Insp Fiona Gaffney says: "With every passing hour Colin is not found we are becoming more and more worried.

“I am appealing today to everyone to help spread the message.

"Just by retweeting a message or sharing a facebook post, or even just through word of mouth, you could help unearth a vital clue as to Colin’s whereabouts.”

Anyone who sees Mr Vasey is asked to contact police.
