Cat makes recovery after getting paw stuck in collar

Alex Regan

BBC News

A cat has made a full recovery after badly damaging his leg when he got it stuck in his neck collar.

The RSPCA said Duncan came into the care of their Radcliffe branch in July having spent three weeks receiving emergency treatment at vets when he was found wandering the streets of Nottingham disorientated and in pain.

The cat was taken in by the RSPCA after a member of the public told the charity about his plight. Duncan had no microchip and no owner was found.

After two operations to help heal his wound, Duncan got the all-clear and has now found "his perfect forever home".

The RSCPA has advised cat owners to provide their pets with quick-release collars, so the felines can get out of their collars if they are in trouble.

Beeley Edge with David Blunkett

David Blunkett takes Clare Balding for a walk across Beeley Edge in the Peak District.
David Blunkett takes Clare Balding for a walk across Beeley Edge in the Peak District. Joining them are his wife, Margaret, and his guide dog, Barley. Despite being blind from birth, Lord Blunkett has always been a keen rambler and is President of his local Ramblers group.

En route they encounter half a dozen cattle, which have to be navigated carefully as David once had three ribs broken by a cow which, he recalls, came towards him with a 'primeval bellow' and knocked him over. They also pass the lakes that supply the extraordinary gardens at Chatsworth House, including the Emperor Fountain built to impress a visiting Russian Czar... who didn't turn up.

Disaster strikes after couple save Thomas Cook trip

Gavin Bevis

BBC News

Two pensioners who managed to save their holiday when it was almost scuppered by the collapse of Thomas Cook have seen it turn into a catastrophe.

Jan and Mick Bland, from Thurnby Lodge, had to book last-minute replacement flights to Rhodes last month when their original flights were cancelled due to the travel firm's collapse.

But in the rush, the pair failed to arrange replacement travel insurance - a move they were left to rue when 74-year-old Mick fell down some steps on the Greek island earlier this week and suffered a fractured skull.

Their daughter Kerry Bland said her father had been told by doctors it was not safe to board his booked flight on Sunday, so they will have to raise money to buy a further replacement flight.

They are also facing the prospect of a hefty medical bill as Mr Bland did not have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Ms Bland, who along with her sister has taken over the full-time care of her severely disabled brother while they are away, said: "He [Mick] has had scans, stitches and will require medication.

"We just want them back. It could be the end of October before they're able to return. It's traumatic."

Leicestershire Police said the driver of the car involved was reported to have left the scene of the crash on foot.

Ex-rugby captain's four-year ban after failing drug test

The former captain of Lincoln Rugby Football Club has been banned for four years after failing a drugs test.

Leigh Dearden failed the test in March this year after testing positive for two different steroids and cocaine.

A report for the Rugby Football Union says he claimed he'd been given medication by an associate who had told him it was a painkiller.

He said he was "horrified" when informed of his result.

But after saying he'd never taken recreational or performance enhancing drugs, he then refused to disclose further information.

Mr Dearden then failed to attend a hearing or respond to further requests which, according to the rules, is automatically considered to be an admission of the offence and that taking them was intentional.

A spokesperson for Lincoln Rugby Club said: "Lincoln Rugby Club are thoroughly disappointed in the behaviour of this former player.

"We do not condone substance abuse and have a zero tolerance policy towards drug taking."
