Mental health absences rise among ambulance staff

The number of East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) staff taking sick leave due to poor mental health is on the rise, new figures suggest.

EMAS
BBC

The figures released to the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act show 431 members of EMAS staff took leave due to issues such as stress, anxiety and depression between 2014-19.

Ambulance service bosses say it's partly down to the level of abuse workers receive while doing their job.

The government say it's funding a number of initiatives for emergency workers to tackle stigma around mental health.

The Reverend Kev Charles, chaplain and staff support lead at EMAS, says support is in place:

We became the first ambulance service in the country to sign the 'Blue Light Pledge' which is to fight the stigma of mental health in the workplace. We also use a ambulance service charity which offers one-on-one counselling."

National Trust

The National Trust, which owns Clumber Park, said the ornamental bridge would be closed to pedestrians and cyclists today and Tuesday.

Most of the bridge's balustrade went into the River Poulter, in March 2018, leaving the National Trust with a huge repair bill.

The stone was retrieved from the water at the park, near Worksop, and part of it will be used in the restoration.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and arson with intent to endanger life.

He was also detained on suspicion of theft of a vehicle and was later released on bail.

'Severe weather' halts Robin Hood Pageant

David Pittam

BBC News Online

Nottingham City Council is facing a problem ancient battle commanders would have recognised - heavy rains turning the field of play to mud.

Although unlike the council, they could go on without worrying about the health and safety.

This year's Robin Hood Pageant, which was supposed to go ahead this weekend, has had to be postponed until spring next year because of "unseasonably wet autumn weather".

Jousting
Nottingham City Council

It has left the ground at Newstead Abbey, where the popular battle recreation should have taken place, waterlogged.

And there is further heavy rain on the way.

The council said those who have already bought tickets for this year’s event can chose between a refund or a ticket for the next event.

Passive vaping 'does not post a health risk'

Press Association

Vaping in a confined space does not pose a risk to those nearby, according to an expert.

Professor John Britton, consultant in respiratory medicine at the University of Nottingham, said: "Most of what comes out in the vapour is water. It's a courtesy issue."

However he warned against putting vapers and smokers in the same area as this could tempt them back into the habit.

Public Health England (PHE) has said that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking.

Cat makes recovery after getting paw stuck in collar

A cat has made a full recovery after badly damaging his leg when he got it stuck in his neck collar.

The RSPCA said Duncan came into the care of their Radcliffe branch in July having spent three weeks receiving emergency treatment at vets when he was found wandering the streets of Nottingham disorientated and in pain.

The cat was taken in by the RSPCA after a member of the public told the charity about his plight. Duncan had no microchip and no owner was found.

After two operations to help heal his wound, Duncan got the all-clear and has now found "his perfect forever home".
