Visitors to the New Forest are being urged to keep their distance from the national park’s free-roaming animals amid concern many people are getting too close to them.
Head agister Jonathan Gerrelli said: "Most New Forest ponies and donkeys are even-tempered animals and often come close to visitors, but they are not used to being handled and should be left alone.
"The animals may look friendly but can bite or kick, especially when they have young with them."
Treating the animals as tame encourages them to pester people and hang around busy roads and car parks putting them at risk of road accidents, the New Forest National Park Authority said.
New Forest ponies are well adapted to thrive all year round in the wild and there is no need to feed them, it added.

On 6 June 1944, British commandos were fighting their way from the beaches of Normandy further inland, to support troops who had landed in the early hours of the morning.
They had secured the strategically important river crossing of Pegasus Bridge, and as the Germans launched a counter offensive there was a race against time to get reinforcements to the bridge.
Help came from an unlikely source, as commandos with heavy mortar rounds came across a white horse called George, which helped shoulder the burden of their load.
Together they made the hazardous journey to the bridge and were able to secure the river crossing that paved the way for troops to be able to move further into France and ultimately defeat the Nazis.

He brought together Leave and Remain-supporting Conservative MPs in January to devise an alternative Brexit proposal known as the "Malthouse Compromise".
Writing in the Sun newspaper, Mr Malthouse described himself as "the new face, with fresh new ideas".
Mr Malthouse - who voted to leave the EU - said his "primary objective" was to secure a deal before the 31 October deadline, but said it was still necessary to prepare for the possibility of no deal.
