West Yorkshire Police say the huge rise in the number of motorists caught driving at over 100mph is due to recently installed smart motorway speed cameras.

According to figures obtained by road safety charity Brake, 2,252 drivers were caught travelling at ore than 100mph in 2018, up from 345 the previous year.

When asked about the dramatic rise the force said: "In November 2017 the smart motorway speed cameras were switched on which explains the increase in offences."

Enterprise zones 'failed to deliver' jobs boost in England

A multimillion-pound government policy to boost job creation has failed to deliver, research has revealed.

In 2011, the government announced "enterprise zones" in England to try to improve economic growth, forecasting 54,000 new jobs between 2012 and 2015.

But BBC-commissioned research found by 2017 only 17,307 jobs had been created in 24 zones around England, - and in two areas the number of jobs had fallen.

The government said it had created 38,000 jobs since 2012.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) said it did not recognise the methodology used in the research.

Enterprise zones, including Sheffield City Region, Aire Valley Leeds and Humber, offered cheaper business rates, superfast broadband and lower levels of planning control.

The research, which was conducted by think tank charity Centre for Cities using data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), showed the number of jobs created fell short by nearly three-quarters of the amount predicted in the government's initial announcement in 2011.

The firm was criticised after recording an increase in the number of serious pollution incidents in 2018 and, as a result, was given a two out of four star rating.

Yorkshire Water said in a statement: "This level of performance is absolutely not reflective of the company’s ambition to protect the environment and falls far short of the standards required to meet our aim to be recognised as an industry leader.”

It said steps taken to address the problem have lead to a 36% reduction in the number of pollution incidents in 2019 compared to the same period last year.

Only one UK water company, Northumbrian Water, was awarded the highest four start rating.
