According to a report last year, the cuts had "compromised" the way Merseyside fire and Rescue Service responds to emergencies.

But an inspection by the industry regulator last month commended the service, saying it had was "outstanding" at preventing fires and "good" at responding to them.

The changes will be funded with about £1m from "current reserves combined with robust debt repayment plans," the fire service said.

It confirmed that overnight cover at Liverpool city centre and Wallasey stations will be maintained.

There had been plans to shut these stations overnight last year that had to be shelved after protest from the Fire Brigades Union and public.

We cautiously welcome the move and are still discussing how best to implement it without detrimental impact to firefighters conditions of service.
