Ambulance crews battled to save man who fell into lake

Police say the man who died after falling into Windermere earlier this week was 57 and from Heversham, near Milnthorpe.

Emergency services were called to Glebe Road, one of the busiest tourist areas in the Lake District, just before 13:00 on Wednesday, and medical staff from the ambulance and air ambulance tried in vain to save the man's life.

Police say the coroner has been informed, and they have no reason to be suspicious about the man's death.

East Midlands Airport charges U-turn: No refunds

David Pittam

BBC News Online

East Midlands Airport will not be offering refunds to those who paid for their rapid drop off, despite admitting there had been problems since they raised the prices.

Responding to a question from the BBC, a spokesman said: "We are not refunding passengers who have used rapid drop off.

"We offer a full range of free and paid for parking options so that passengers have a choice.

"These include one hour’s free parking in Long Stay 2, free 30 minutes parking for disabled passengers, £4 for 30 minutes in short stay as well as rapid drop off next to the main entrance."

East Midlands Airport charges U-turn: Your reaction

Facebook

"Thanks goodness for common sense" was the almost unanimous response to the news that East Midlands Airport is scrapping its controversial new rapid drop off parking charges.

The airport announced this afternoon it will go back to the old charges of £2 for 10 minutes parking in the rapid drop off, which was briefly raised to £2 for five minutes (with £1 for every minute over) earlier this month.

Bosses said they had done it to improve traffic flow but admitted drivers were being charged just waiting to leave, with customers complaining of gridlock and "total chaos" at the exits.

Carol Whyke wrote: "I should think so too. Maddy Ward added it was "still too much - but a step in the right direction."

But Martyn Webster and a number of others are unhappy with the lower price, with some saying they should not have to pay just to drop people off. "Still a complete and utter ripoff," he wrote.

BBC News Online

East Midlands Airport has decided to scrap its new higher parking charges for the rapid drop off zone after scenes of "total chaos" at the barriers.

Andy Tyler-Smith, from the airport, insisted the change - which saw the time drivers could stay for £2 drop from 10 minutes to five - had been done "with the best intentions".

There was a further £1 charge for every minute over.

Mr Tyler-Smith claimed it was to improve traffic flow but customers had reported gridlock since it was introduced earlier this month - meaning drivers' charges kept rising as they queued to leave.

He admitted this had been a problem at peak times.

The airport has announced it's returning to its normal charges.

'Total chaos' at airport drop off point

Nick Smith

BBC News Online

Angry motorists claim problems at East Midlands Airport's rapid drop off mean they are being charged when stuck in exit queues.

One man said the stationary traffic waiting to pay to leave the rapid drop off yesterday was "total chaos".

He said he was waiting for so long that if someone hadn't opened the barrier and let everyone through, dropping his parents off would have cost him £27.

Last month tariffs were introduced which meant motorists have to pay £1 for every minute they stay over five, making delays more expensive.

Queues
@swfcmark1974

A regular visitor said: "Because of lengthy queues, especially in the morning, it's taking way more than five minutes.

"This is because there are only two barriers in operation and quite often one is usually broken, making the situation farcical."

An airport spokesman said that the issue is being looked into as an "immediate priority."

New HS2 route proposals require more demolitions

Chris Doidge

BBC Radio Derby, political reporter

HS2 Ltd has published new proposals for the railway's route near Stapleford and Trowell.

Realigning the M1 would have taken more than three years, but the new route proposed would mean the road doesn't need to be moved.

The new route is about 80m closer to Stapleford, and 20 additional homes would need to be demolished, mostly on Tiree Close and Iona Drive.

The new proposals also call for a railhead to be built near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, to facilitate the construction of the line.

While no changes are to be made to the route near Long Eaton, additional pieces of land have been safeguarded for potential development in the future.
