Concerns over change to autism services

Parents have raised concerns about a change in autism support services in Staffordshire.

The current provider, Midland Psychology, has been told its contract for south Staffordshire won't be renewed at the end of the month and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in the county promised the new provider would be in place by 1 October.

Burton MP Andrew Griffiths has written to the health secretary to say both he and parents have concerns about the CCGs' stop-gap solution.

Mr Griffiths said he was told the Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust would take over until the end of the year, but called the process "shambolic" and called on Health Secretary Matt Hancock to investigate.

Parents have complained that calls to Midlands Psychology haven't been answered and appointments have been cancelled, since it was announced their contract was coming to an end.

They said they feared the continuity of care for their children would be lost and that valuable time would be missed in their diagnosis and care.

In a letter to parents, Midlands Psychology said it was only told its contract wasn't being renewed on 30 August.

It said it was trying to "close services down in a way that is safe and effective for all of the children we see", but the decision will "inevitably leave some of you mid-assessment and others waiting for help, following a diagnosis".

'Lifelong-friend' teddy bear sells for £1,100

A teddy bear that was treasured by a Staffordshire woman for 99 years has been sold at auction for £1,100 - more than 10 times its estimate.

The toy, named Bear, was given to Ida Goring by her father in 1916 and she kept it until she died in 2015, shortly before her 102nd birthday.

Ida Goring's daughter, Jenny Pickett, said the bear now needed someone new to "care for him" and the money from his sale would go towards a headstone for her brother David Goring, who died aged 67 in 2016.

The auctioneers Hansons had listed the "faithful" bear with a guide price of between £70 and £100.

Financial investigators at Staffordshire Police have got the money under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The biggest haul was nearly £120,000 that was seized by officers from a van on the M6 at Stafford.

The cash will be sent to the Home Office and if there aren't any appeals, half of it will be returned to the force.

Stream of traffic 'crawled past house'

It's not just drivers who have suffered today, as Colin Lloyd says, living in the small town of Penkridge.

"Spare a thought for us and everybody else living on the A449 in Penkridge suffering all day with the stream of lorries crawling past our house and the traffic fumes AND we have to suffer it again tonight from 22:00!" he wrote.

Earlier Richard Hancher told us his mother had been effectively left trapped in her home near J12, because of the volume of traffic passing outside.

Story so far on M6 lorry crash

Here's how events unfolded this morning:

  • A lorry hit the central reservation barrier between J12 and J13 at about 00:30
  • The driver only suffered minor injuries, the ambulance service added, and he's been taken to hospital as a precaution
  • The crash damaged the concrete barrier and caused fuel, radiator fluid and debris to be spread across both sides of the M6
  • Highways England reopened three lanes southbound at about 12:30, but said the northbound side would stay shut for longer for resurfacing work
  • Drivers have been diverted along the A449 and the A5, leading to long delays on roads around the M6

'Gridlocked' roads with M6 closed

Allen Cook

BBC News

It's not just the M6 itself that's heavily congested, surrounding roads in Staffordshire have been described as being "gridlocked" by people on Twitter.

With both sides of the motorway shut between J12 and J13, Highways England's been diverting drivers off the motorway through Penkridge and Gailey.

Highways England

User @thatsmytweet0 tweeted that all roads in Stafford, Penkridge, Cannock and Stone were "gridlocked" and called for a bypass to help prevent congestion caused by problems on the M6.

There are also long delays on the M6 itself, with user @Lizziemcfc saying it had taken three hours to get from Salford to Stafford.

Coaches divert to Wolverhampton

BBC News Travel

National Express coaches are having to be diverted away from Penkridge this morning with the M6 shut in both directions between J12 and J13.

The firm says, with the motorway not expected to reopen before midday, it can't get to Penkridge so services will instead use Wolverhampton.

Hours of delays for drivers near M6

Allen Cook

BBC News

Delays of several hours are being reported by drivers in Staffordshire as routes around the M6 remain congested after the lorry crash just after midnight.

Twitter user @cdutts said it had already taken him more than two hours to get to Stoke-on-Trent from Stafford.

While @burrows_andy tweeted, 40 minutes since leaving work, he was "still closer to work than home" due to the M6 closure.

Another driver Jason Russell said he joined the M6 at J16 and found it at a "standstill" after Keele services. So much so, that he'd decided to turn off at J15 and "logon and work from home".

Congestion building on roads around the M6

Roads around the M6 near Cannock are also getting congested, the Inrix travel service reports.

With the motorway shut between J12 and J13 in both directions, drivers on both sides are being directed by Highways England through Penkridge and Gailey via the A449 and A5.

Call for wider Taser use by PC run down by car

Lee Thomas

Newsreader, BBC Radio Stoke

A police officer seriously hurt when a banned driver crushed her against a fence has told the BBC she believed all officers should now be given Tasers.

Claire Bond after sentencing
PA Media

PC Claire Bond was responding to reports a car had hit a garage in Stafford last year when she was struck and then dragged along by the car.

Her leg and kneecap were broken and she said "I look back now and I have no doubt that I would have used a Taser in order to stop him from going any further if I'd had one."

Gurajdeep Malhi, 26, from Stafford, was jailed on Monday for more than 12 years after admitting grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving.

Last month, Northamptonshire's Chief Constable said he was issuing tasers to all frontline officers following the death of PC Andrew Harper in Berkshire.
