Exeter-based airline Flybe is at risk of collapse, according to reports.

The airline is reportedly in talks over potential emergency financing after suffering rising losses, Sky News reported.

It reported that Flybe has been holding talks with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Department for Transport (DfT) on whether the government could provide or facilitate any emergency financing to the company.

Some 2,000 jobs are said to be at risk at the carrier, which is Europe's largest regional airline, a main operator at both Exeter and Newquay airports, and major provider of flights for the Channel Islands.

Last February, the airline was bought by a consortium led by Virgin Atlantic, Connect Airways, following poor financial results.

Flybe said it was continuing "to focus on providing great service and connectivity for our customers, to ensure that they can continue to travel as planned".

It added: "We don't comment on rumour or speculation."

Helicopter lost window because of 'insufficient adhesive'

A helicopter lost a window mid-flight in Cornwall because "little or no adhesive" had been applied to the rubber retaining seal during maintenance, an investigation has found.

During a post-maintenance flight from Liskeard Heliport on 27 June the door window of the helicopter's co-pilot fell away, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said.

Its report said "liberal application of high-concentration soap" while the door was being reinstalled was likely to have contributed to the loss of the window, by compromising the rubber seal.

The report concluded "deviation from the prescribed maintenance manual procedure and lack of effective supervisory oversight" contributed to the errors.

The AAIB said the maintenance company involved had made four changes to safety procedures as a result of the investigation.

Medical director Allister Grant said: "It really is unprecedented, we have not had to do this before.

"Our A&E Department has been under continuous sustained pressure over the Christmas period and new year period.

"We have had patients waiting in Emergency Department for beds for up to 12 hours and queues in the corridors."

Patients who don't require urgent help will instead be redirected to other services - such as local pharmacies, GPs, minor injury units, and the NHS 111 number.

The hospital trust, which has published a list of waiting times, says this will help hospital staff concentrate on those who really need specialist care.
