  3. Sea pollution fear after erosion exposes former tip site

People living on part of the East Yorkshire coast have raised safety concerns after the contents of a former rubbish tip started falling into the sea due to coastal erosion.

When it closed in the 1960s, Withernsea waste site was hundreds of yards from the sea.

However, erosion has once again exposed the rubbish held in the tip which is now tumbling into the sea below.

Jim Blake, who lives nearby, said: "It's quite a revelation of the stuff that is coming out. Lots of plastic, lots of glass.

"There are batteries in there, there's asbestos. And all of this is just leaking out into our sea, and we have wonderful fishing. Lobsters and crabs and things. How is this affecting those?"

East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which is responsible for the site, has not been available for comment.
