Social media fuels attacks on 999 crews - Firefighter

People carrying out attacks on emergency crews in the Humber region are filming and sharing their actions on social media, according to a firefighter.

The filming of attacks is then helping to fuel a rise in incidents, he says.

Speaking at the launch of a campaign to tackle the increase in assaults on police, fire and ambulance staff, Hull firefighter Alistair Johnston said: "[You have] things thrown at you while you're trying to do your job.

"The social media thing - they'll be like 'I've got this' and they'll Snapchat it and 'This is what I've done' and it just becomes a game to them."

Emergency service bosses in the Humber region are now calling on the public to support them as they try to tackle what they say is an unacceptable increase in assaults:

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission health watchdog have been visiting the county to see how staff and facilities are coping.

Some improvements have been made for "walk-in" patients.

But Max Brassington, from United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, says there's still work to do around ambulance transfer times:

We remain under extreme pressure from the level of demand we're seeing... We know there's significant pressure across all our sites, as many emergency departments are across the country this winter."

Hundreds of drivers have been clocked breaking the speed limits after extra officers were deployed across Lincolnshire as part of a new campaign by the Counties Road Safety Partnership.

Camera operator Steve Cook says it's astounding how fast some drivers are going when they catch them.

Balloon and lantern releases to be banned on council land

The release of sky lanterns and balloons could be banned in some areas of Lincolnshire.

South Kesteven District Council plans to impose the ban on its own land, because of the danger posed to wildlife and the environment.

Matthew Capper, from the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, says balloons and lanterns can be harmful.

"Balloon releases are not good for wildlife, particularly if something like that ends up the sea. For a lot of marine life, if something like that looks like a jellyfish floating in the water then they're going to eat it.

"Setting off something like a Chinese lantern which has a naked flame can set fire to dry areas."

Councillors are expected to adopt the ban at a meeting in Grantham on Tuesday.

Eight schools, including four in Lincoln, have been taking part in the trial which began in 2017.

However, county councillors look set to end the scheme due to costs of rolling it out further and the limited number of schools the vehicles could cover.

A report due to go before a highways scrutiny meeting on 20 January will say councillors had concerns about extending the programme.

It will say: “Members of the working group recommended that after giving full consideration to the information provided by officers that the CCTV enforcement trial be ended.

"In part due to the cost, level of effectiveness and the limited number of schools the vehicle could cover. The costs of rolling the scheme out further were also a key factor."

The firm says it wants to make the addition to the menu as a result of of more services being introduced to and from Lincoln.

A new LNER menu says its chefs have "recently enjoyed spending time with our Yorkshire butchers...developing the perfect Lincolnshire sausage".

But farmers and commuters have called for a re-think on the policy and argue the product should be sourced from Lincolnshire.

Lincolnshire County Council leader Martin Hill says: "It should be Lincolnshire sausages on a Lincolnshire recipe, made in Lincolnshire. I 100% back the campaign.

LNER has been approached for comment but has not as yet responded.

Council tax rise to pay for social care and floods

Your Council Tax bills are set to rise by at least £45 from April, according to Lincolnshire County Council.

Over half of the 3.5% rise - £45.19 for Band D properties - will be dedicated to paying for adult social care, officials say.

But the leader of the county council says they also plan to spend more on roads, as well as equipping Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue with more pumps to react to flooding.

In 2019, hundreds of properties were evacuated because of flooding in Wainfleet (pictured), Market Rasen, Scotter and Ruskington.

A final decision on the exact bill will be reached next month.
