Disabled veteran's cycle access blocked by barriers

Nick Smith

BBC News Online

Changes could be made to new cycle path barriers after a disabled military veteran said they restricted his access.

Michael Metcalfe, 43, from Arnold, who suffered a prolapsed spinal disc during military training, rides a recumbent tricycle and says he is unable to navigate the cycle path between Wilford Lane and Compton Acres.

"The barriers were designed to stop motorbikes but if they can stop a motorbike, they will stop a person with mobility issues," he said.

Mr Metcalfe said the path is vital to him as it gives him a sense of freedom.

However, following a complaint he made to Rushcliffe Borough Council outlining his concerns, the council has said it is open to finding a way to make the path more accessible for disabled people.

A Rushcliffe Borough Council spokeswoman said: "We were pleased to listen to and work with Mr Metcalfe to assess how one of the barriers could be amended to help him and other users navigate the route more easily."

Mr Metcalfe said: "In fairness to the council, they were attentive - it seems they did care.

"But it appears they just didn't think about how it would affect disabled people and that is something which needs to change - not just here but across the country."

Young East Midlanders 'trapped in renting'

East Midlands Today

The rising cost of buying a home is trapping young East Midlanders in the rented sector, according to a report.

Research by financial company PwC predicts that the East Midlands will see the country's fastest rising property prices, up by 2.9% in 2019.

That would put the average price of a house in our region up from £190,000 now to about £214,000 by 2022, making it harder for people in their 20s to stop renting.

PwC also found young renters were now paying out an average 25% of their income on rent and in our cities, this could be even higher, edging close to the official definition of unaffordable - 30%.

BBC News Online

Volunteers are searching for a pair of raccoon dogs they believe were abandoned in Nottinghamshire.

One of the Japanese mammals, also known as a tanuki, was seen crossing a road near Clifton last month.

Despite an ongoing search by exotic animal rescuers Beastwatch UK, traps and sightings by their volunteers, they have still not been found.

The group believes they are a pair that were dumped by their owner, as no-one has come forward to claim them, which they said was an increasing problem.

Police said they had not received any reports.

But when another pair went missing in the Nottinghamshire village of Clarborough earlier this year, they described the animals as "potentially dangerous" and advised anyone who saw them to call 999.
