The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew have reopened, although a limited number of visitors will be allowed in at any one time.

Those wishing to see the gardens, including members, will need to pre-book tickets online in order to ensure numbers are manageable and queuing is kept to a minimum.

Pre booked tickets will be for a specified entrance time slot to manage the flow of people, while some enclosed parts of the gardens will remain closed.

A Kew spokesperson said: “This first phase of our reopening will adhere strictly to government guidelines.

"We will review our arrangements daily and will not hesitate to close the gardens again if we believe the safety of our staff or visitors is being compromised in any way."

Kew Gardens closed on 22 March as part of the nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus, but has been connecting with enthusiasts online via virtual visits.

Consultation launched into unblocking Croydon train lines

Drawing of expanded East Croydon station
Network Rail

A consultation looking at unblocking railway bottlenecks around Croydon to improve services on the Brighton mainline has been launched.

Network Rail has proposed a series of measures including adding to the number of platforms at an expanded East Croydon station, building extra tracks, and introducing various railway flyovers and dive-unders along the line.

John Halsall, Network Rail managing director, southern region, said: "These are clearly challenging times for the country and the rail industry, but we know that a safe, reliable and punctual railway will remain absolutely vital to the region and the country’s economy.

“That is why we must continue to plan for the long term and progress proposals to unblock the Croydon bottleneck and remove the single greatest constraint on train punctuality and capacity on the Brighton Main Line."

The proposals, along with details of a dedicated consultation line, can be viewed here.

Richmond Park to reopen to cyclists

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Cyclists will be allowed to commute through Richmond Park from next week.

The immediate families of children aged 12 and under will also be allowed to cycle with them.

From next Tuesday cyclists will be allowed to use the park on weekdays before 10:00 and after 16:00.

Cycling was temporarily banned in the park (other than for under 12s and NHS workers) at the end of March to help with social distancing and prevent congestion at the park gates.

The latest changes mark a gradual reintroduction of cycling to provide access for weekday commuters, but key workers on their way to work will still be allowed to cycle through at any time.

Temporary mortuary set up in Fulham goes unused

Local Democracy Reporting Service

A temporary mortuary in west London created to help cope with deaths from coronavirus has remained unused so far.

The tented structure has capacity for 150 bodies and was erected beside West London Coroners Court in Bagley’s Lane in Fulham.

It was set up in April at the height of the pandemic. Hammersmith and Fulham Council is responsible for caring for the coroners’ court.

A spokesman said it has not had to be used to help cope with the high number of deaths during the coronavirus crisis.

A similar tented building was erected at Westminster coroners court in Horseferry Road in central London in March for people who died from the virus in the boroughs of Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea.

Earlier in May, Wandsworth councillors heard that a temporary mortuary for up to 900 bodies at Putney Vale Crematorium had so far “been unused” during the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson confirmed that there will be a phased reopening at Kew Gardens and Wakehurst in Sussex from 1 June, but the number of visitors will be limited.

Pre-booked tickets will be for a specified entrance time slot to manage the flow of people coming into the gardens while two-metre markings outside Victoria Gate on Kew Road – the main entrance – will be in place to help visitors ensure social distancing.

A spokesperson said: “This first phase of our reopening will adhere strictly to government guidelines.

A travel agent died with Covid-19 two weeks after returning from a dream trip to Mauritius.

Romeo “Romy” Castillo Jr, 34, was sent on the trip to the Indian Ocean island by employer DialAFlight as a reward for his “professionalism and enthusiasm”.

He was there for less than a week before the visit was cut short by the pandemic.

His brother Clive, 31, said Mr Castillo started showing symptoms of the virus after returning to the UK and began working from home in Pimlico.

He was admitted to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where he lost his fight for life just three days later.

Clive said: “Romy was one of the sweetest and kindest souls you could ever meet.

“He had a smile that really lit up a room.”

Mr Castillo’s parents, who live in the Philippines, were unable to attend his funeral on 23 April because of strict lockdown restrictions.

Police confiscate £1m in cash following a traffic stop

Confiscated cash
Metropolitan Police

Police have confiscated £1m in cash from a man's home after stopping his car.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Operation Venice, which tackles moped crime, stopped the suspect in a car park in north London on Tuesday.

They found £12,000 cash in the car, and the 31-year-old was unable to explain why he had so much money, the force said.

Officers then went to his home in Haringey, north London, and found nearly £1m in banknotes stuffed into shoe boxes and bags, along with a number of passports.

Det Ch Insp Shaun White said: "There is no justifiable reason for this much cash not being kept in a bank account, unless it has been sourced from ill-gotten activities involving criminality."
