West Midlands fire services rated 'good'

Both the West Midlands Fire Service and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have been rated as "good" by inspectors.

They were among 16 to undergo their first inspection recently and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services has complained it has seen too much variation in the way they work around the country.

Both local fire services are commended for the way they are run, but the inspectors did say Shropshire's fire service "needs to do better at protecting the public through fire regulation".

Waters receding at New Road

Sussex 255 v Worcestershire 14-2 - lunch

While they're at lunch at Chester Road, Kidderminster, on the second day of Worcestershire's rescheduled game with Sussex, things are now looking a little brighter 15 miles away back at county headquarters, at New Road.

It has stopped raining, the River Severn has now reached its peak, the waters are starting to recede and the clean-up operation has begun in parts of the ground.

On past experience, it usually takes three weeks to get the place ready for cricket again after a New Road flood, which would wipe out next week's one-day game against Australia A, on 25 June.

But the next home game after that, the Championship fixture against Derbyshire on 7 July, at least looks a reasonable target.

The club are yet to comment on how long they expect to be at Kidderminster this time.

Dozens of motorway tailgaters stopped

A two-week crackdown on tailgaters on the M6 in the West Midlands resulted in 44 drivers being stopped.

Fond memories for Bears skipper

Yorkshire v Warwickshire - start delayed

Apart from being the country’s joint top Championship wicket-taker, Warwickshire captain Jeetan Patel will have one other advantage when he leads the Bears against Yorkshire at York today.

The 38-year-old New Zealand off-spinner knows Clifton Park well, having spent a summer playing club cricket for York when he first came to England in 2003.

"As soon as I saw in the fixture list that we would be playing at York I was really excited," said Patel. "It will be great to go back and reconnect with a lot of friends I made. It's a lovely city and a lovely ground.

“I had an okay season there. I certainly didn't set the world alight but it was great life experience. It was my first time away from home, in a different country and I was having to fend for myself and fortunate to be around a great bunch of lads who looked after me.

He added: "I wasn't on a lot of money but that wasn't what I was there for. What I did was learn about the lifestyle in England which is so different. In New Zealand it's all about cafes and meeting people and friends there, whereas here it's all about going to the pub and sharing stories over a pint.

"I was a youngster learning my trade and wanting to get out and about and give things a go and that summer really grew me as a person.”

Unpaid forensics roles a 'disaster in waiting'

A forensic specialist from Hexham has called West Midlands Police's appeal for volunteer digital forensic analysts a "disaster waiting to happen".

The force has advertised the unpaid roles which involve sifting through "distressing [and] indecent images".

Forensics professionals have expressed concerns that volunteers working at least 16 hours a month will not receive adequate emotional support.

Sam Raincock said on Twitter: "I actually cannot believe what I have read here.

"It is an absolute disgrace and a disaster waiting to happen."
