A hunt is on for a group of "clandestine migrants" seen getting out of a foreign registered lorry in Surrey.

The group were let out of the vehicle in a lay-by on St Peter's Lane in Chertsey at about 13:50 BST, Surrey Police said.

On the Runnymede Beat Facebook page, an officer said five people had already been rounded up a police dog named Kiwi who was "currently breathing down his neck with satisfaction".

Enquiries are under way to locate the lorry, which is believed to have come from the M3 and headed off towards the M25.

The search continues whilst the identify and welfare of the detainees is established, the force added.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or with any information, is asked to contact Surrey Police.

Council branded 'hypocritical' over plastic cup usage

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Lewisham Council bought 144,000 disposable plastic cups in the 12 months ending March.

The figures have been labelled “hypocritical” by Lewisham and Greenwich London Assembly candidate for the Conservatives, Charlie Davis, since the authority last November moved a motion to ban single use plastics and in February declared a climate emergency.

The cups were bought to stock Laurence House, the Town Hall, Civic Suite and Eros House.

The declaration came a month before the FOI period ended.

But Mr Davis said the authority was not moving as quickly as others to change its practices, such as Greenwich Council, which has pledged to remove single use plastics from its buildings by 2020.

Councillor Sophie McGeevor said the council had already made a commitment to end the use of single and short term use plastic in council buildings, offices, schools and nurseries by May 2022.

But the cabinet member for environment and transport said the council had stopped restocking the cups, but much more needed to be done.

Extinction Rebellion activists block concrete works in east London

Extinction Rebellion
Extinction Rebellion

Members of Extinction Rebellion are currently blocking the entrance to the London Concrete works near Pudding Mill Lane and by Stratford’s Olympic Park.

Around 50 people, on both foot and bikes, with banners saying "The air that we grieve" and "Silvertown Tunnel No", are blocking both the gates stopping any vehicles and workers from entering the site, with four people currently locked to iron pipes.

Eleanor McAree, 25, from Extinction Rebellion Tower Hamlets said: “Concrete has a huge environmental impact and building another tunnel will only make air pollution across East London worse. The air pollution is already at dangerous levels and is affecting the health of children and adults in the area.

"With the siting of this industry right next to two schools, these children face lifelong negative impact on their health.”
