Chief constable 'must act on commitment to tackle UVF'

East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson has said the new PSNI chief constable must act on his commitment to take on the loyalist paramilitary group, the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF).

"It's encouraging to hear what the chief constable has had to say... but the community want action," he said.

Last week, Chief Constable Simon Byrne said the PSNI would "not tolerate" the UVF and would "take it on using all the powers".

Mr Byrne made the comments following tensions surrounding a bonfire in the grounds of the Avoniel Leisure Centre in east Belfast.

Woman dies in two-car crash in Armagh


A woman has died in a car accident in Armagh on Sunday.

She was driving one of two cars involved in a collision at the junction of Loughgall Road and Ballybrannon Road at 14:45 BST on Sunday.

Police are appealing for information.

Three arrested after shots fired at Lisburn flat

Three men have been arrested after shots were fired at a flat in Lisburn on Wednesday morning.

It happened at about 01:45 BST on the Ballynahinch Road.

One man was in the flat but was uninjured.

The road remains closed and traffic is being diverted to Kensington Park towards Saintfield Road and, from the Ballynahinch side, via Waterloo Road.

Police believe the gunman fled in a white Honda Jeep.

Det Con Maxwell said three males in the car, aged 20, 24 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences.

Detectives have not yet established a motive and a number of searches are taking place in the area.

Historic building gutted in arson attack

A historic building in County Antrim has been destroyed in an overnight blaze.

Firefighters and three appliances were called to Steeple House on Steeple Road in Antrim at 05:30 BST on Tuesday 2 July.

The old building was used in past years for Antrim Borough Council meetings, but is now no longer in use.

The mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth said it was "a great loss of an historic building and well-known Antrim landmark".

Man who died in Prussia Cove was from Northern Ireland

The man who died in the sea at Prussia Cove in west Cornwall was 43 years old and from County Down in Northern Ireland, police have said.

The man was spotted in the water at about 12:50 BST on Friday.

He was brought in to Praa Sands and treated by ambulance crews but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shots fired in overnight attack

Shots have been fired in an overnight attack at a house in Coalisland, County Tyrone.

Six people were inside the house at Loughview Gardens when the shooting happened at about 04:10 BST on Monday.


No one was injured, but windows were broken.

Police said it was an "appalling attack" and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Man seriously injured in alleged assault

A man in his 50s is being treated in hospital for a serious head injury after an alleged assault in Castledawson, County Londonderry.

The incident in the Moyola Avenue area was reported to police at 15:25 BST on Saturday.

The PSNI is appealing for information.
