Farmer risked life to rescue sheep and ewes from flood

Simon Ward

East Midlands Today Reporter

A farmer risked her own life to save 12 sheep and 15 ewes from a flooded field.

Faye Russell, 26, jumped into action to save her flock from the high water after heavy rainfall in South Derbyshire on Sunday.

She had already moved her 300-strong flock to higher ground on Saturday, as her farm is on a floodplain.

But then on Sunday a flash flood submerged one of the fields in 7ft of water, leaving some sheep stranded behind a flood bank.

She said: "Duty called. I just had to do it.

"The sheep and lambs had got themselves cut off on higher ground as the water rose.

"It was cold; it took my breath away. I was very tired, very quickly, but I had to rescue them."

Ex-farmer 'died after combine harvester fall'

Samantha Noble

BBC News Online

A retired farmer suffered a "traumatic" brain injury after falling from a combine harvester, an inquest heard.

Arthur Widdowson, of Nether Handley, died at home in Belle Vue Farm, near Sheffield, on 20 September 2018.

The 88-year-old also suffered broken ribs after the fall, and also fell while being treated in hospital.

Chesterfield Coroner's Court heard a post-mortem examination gave a medical cause of death as pneumonia, with the brain injury and the fall from the combine harvester also recorded as factors.

Adjourning the inquest until 1 April, assistant coroner for Derbyshire Sarah Huntbach said Mr Widdowson's death "may have been due to circumstances other than natural causes".

Simon Ward

Part of a man's house has been cut off after the River Trent burst its banks near Cavendish Bridge, which connects Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

From the picture it appears Sean Cupitt's property has its own lake, but it is actually due to flooding overnight.

Mr Cupitt, who has lived there for two or three years, has been using a small boat to transport sand bags to try to protect a part of the house that is not flooded.

On seeing what had happened he said: "I thought I was dreaming. I was blown away."

Police force 'has deteriorated', inspectors say

Gavin Bevis

BBC News

Derbyshire Police's performance in reducing crime and keeping people safe has deteriorated, inspectors have said.

The force has been told it requires improvement in both areas by Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary Zoe Billingham, following a review of its performance in 2018/19.

She said: "I have concerns about the performance of Derbyshire Constabulary in keeping people safe and reducing crime.

"I have seen some deterioration in performance in important areas, including operational effectiveness and efficiency."

Ms Billingham continued: "My overall assessment is that Derbyshire Constabulary’s performance has declined since our last inspection.

"I am reassured however that the force has taken a range of immediate steps to address the matters highlighted in our inspection, and I will monitor improvements closely."

Derbyshire Police said the identified shortcomings were "a direct consequence of 10 years of austerity where our frontline officers and staff have been working beyond their capacity to protect the public".

Derbyshire County Council said 20 out of 45 libraries at the local authority were being transferred to "community management".
