Annual Sweet Pea festival to come to an end

BBC Shropshire

Wem in Shropshire will hold its final Sweet Pea Festival this weekend, but the organisers say they want the town to remain a centre of learning for growers of the flower.

The annual two-day event is coming to an end because of a lack of volunteers to run it.

Henry Eckford, from Wem, is widely credited with transforming the flower by breeding important new varieties in the 19th Century.

Ben Kaye and the boys' grandfather surprised children at a Shropshire primary school.

Dad does school pick-up in a tank on last day of term

A dad has turned up to do the school pick-up in a tank this afternoon - on his sons' final day of term.

For the past 14 years, Ben Kaye, from Shropshire, has been restoring a Scorpion tank and he says he hopes it's something they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

Mr Kaye said he bought it from a friend a month after he got married and he had to take out a loan to afford it.

His two boys were up last night at his workshop, helping make the final preparations.

They're very, very excited, we've been waiting for a long, long time for this day."

Cheshire cheese makers seek their own 'Wallace and Gromit'

Cheshire cheese makers are looking for something or someone to boost their sales, in the same way that Wallace and Gromit turned around sales of Wensleydale.

David Williams, who makes the cheese from a factory in Crewe said: "It just needs bringing to the public attention a little bit more Cheshire can be perceived as a boring white crumbly cheese, but it's not".

The Cheshire-makers say they've seen their cheese fall out of favour with the supermarkets and Simon Spurrell from the Cheshire Cheese Company in Macclesfield said: "mozzarella's the second biggest selling cheese in the country at the moment, where it used to be cheshire."

And one of the largest producers of Cheshire, Belton Farm in Shropshire, said more work was needed top spread the message to families - because most of their consumers are now over the age of 55.

We are facing the same situation that Wensleydale faced, probably 10 years ago. Their saving grace of course was Wallace and Gromit, who completely reversed the fortunes of Wensleydale and has made Wensleydale Creamery and the cheese of the Yorkshire Dales famous once more and popular."

Rail-worker accident down to 'confusion'

Investigators say a collision on the railway near Nantwich that injured two workers was down to a number of factors, including confusion among workmen about where line-work was being carried out.

Two light rail vehicles crashed into each other at Cholmondeston just after 02:00 on 19 September 2018, leaving one of the workers with life-changing leg and back injuries.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch concluded the design of one of the vehicles meant it had limited visibility while reversing, nobody was controlling its movements from the trackside and because of the confusion about the location of the work, the two vehicles were closer together than expected.

The RAIB made a number of recommendations about safety measures that could be taken, including better awareness of the limited visibility on some rail-vehicles.

The author who created the How To Train Your Dragon series is backing campaigners who want to prevent homes being built near an iron age hillfort.

Cressida Cowell, recently named the new Children's Laureate, said she used monuments like the 3,000-year old Shropshire hillfort as an inspiration for her work.

She visited the Oswestry site two years ago before writing her latest book, The Wizards of Once.
