How 'the friendly games' began

The Island Games, often called the friendly games or even the mini-Olympics, started life as a feature of the Isle of Man year of sport in 1985 as the inter-island games.

Isle of Man

It was supposed to be a one-off sporting event featuring athletes from other small islands. In those first games there were 15 islands and 600 competitors participating in seven sports.

Two years later this supposed one-off event was held again, this time moving to Guernsey where the number of competitors was more than 1,000 and the number of sports was up to nine.

It has grown each year and in Gotland there's an estimated 3,000 athletes from 23 islands competing in 14 sports.

Jersey has the most Island Games medal table wins

It's one thing to look at the total number of gold medals won over 16 years, but what about the table toppers? Who actually won the most games?

Medal table stats

Guernsey came second in the first games but a Channel Island team didn't top the table until 1993 in the Isle of Wight when Jersey won.

That started a run of luck for Jersey who won the next two games in Gibraltar in 1995 and Jersey in 1997, Jersey's next victory was in the Isle of Man in 2001.

Guernsey won their first games in 2003 when they hosted the event and they won again in Shetland in 2005.

Jersey won in Rhodes in 2007, Guernsey in the Isle of Wight in 2011 then at home again in 2015.

The top three performing islands are Jersey who have won the Island Games six times, the Isle of Man with four wins and Guernsey with three.

Single point gave Sark shooters third place

Sark's first medal of the Island Games, in the ABT shooting team event, was won by just one point.

Nicholas Dewe and Stefan Roberts took third place position with 157 points - just one point ahead of their Western Isles rivals in fourth.

Sark shooters

Gibraltar won gold with 166 points, while Menorca took silver with 164.

The team say they're delighted to be on the podium. The medal presentation ceremony will take place in Visby tonight.

With a population of about 500, even one medal for the small island puts them near the top of the table if you base it on medals per head of population.

They took Sark's first medal of the games and are both due to compete for individual medals later. Something Roberts says is more than possible.

Sark Shooters

We're chuffed to bits really, it's been a busy old day, blustery and windy but we've managed to come through and get a nice bronze medal.
