  2. A 50-year-old man in a critical condition after a two-car crash in Renfrewshire.

    The crash happened on the A737 between Lochwinnoch and Howwood at 18:30 on Tuesday.

    The injured man was driving north in a Peugeot 108 when his car struck a Seat Toledo being driven the other way by a 56 year-old man.

  4. Fraudsters used "magical" barcodes to buy TVs for 40 pence from Dundee Tesco Extra

    Mathew Ferguson and Liam Gorrie made off with goods worth £467.

    Dundee Sheriff Court was told they used a code that "magically produces a lower price",  

    They were caught when staff at the South Road store reviewed CCTV footage.

    Ferguson, 21, of Dundee, and Gorrie, 22, of Arbroath, both admitted fraud. They will be sentenced at a later date. 

  5. Man accused of murdering his partner at a flat in Perth makes a second court appearance.

    David Anderson, 41,  is alleged to have strangled barmaid Louise O'Brien, 36, at their home in Dunkeld Road

    Anderson appeared from custody at Perth Sheriff Court where he made no plea or declaration. 

    He was remanded in custody and fully committed for trial. 

  6. Teenager's 'regret and sorrow' after causing his friend's death by dangerous driving

    Aaron Murphy, 19, overtook a line of traffic before his Seat Ibiza mounted a verge, hit a road sign and rolled into a field by the A698 Hawick to Jedburgh road last year, a court heard.

    His passenger Dale Whillans, 18, died after the crash on 6 April.  

    Murphy's lawyer said he had been instructed to express his client's "deep regret and sorrow at the death of someone who was his friend, Dale Whillans". 

    Sentence was deferred.   

  7. Andy Murray progresses to third round of Italian Open in Rome with win over Mikhail Kukushkin

    The British number one beat the Kazakh qualifier 6-3 6-3.

    Murray, 28, who received a bye in the first round, will next face Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut or Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

    The world number three also said he was not anticipating appointing a replacement coach before the French Open, which begins on 22 May.

    It comes after Murray parted company with coach Amelie Mauresmo on Monday.

  8. Thief who took pensioner's savings to buy a scooter ordered to repay £10 a fortnight

    Elizabeth Needs took £1,200 from 87-year-old Bunty Farrand while the pensioner was having her leg amputated.

    Perth Sheriff Court was told that Needs failed to pay back the stolen money and had bought the vehicle instead.  

    It will take her four-and-a-half years to repay the sum.

  9. Temperature reaches 23C in Oban as Scotland records both hottest and coldest spots in UK

    On Tuesday Skye was the warmest area, with the Lusa weather station, recording highs of 26C in the afternoon.

    In contrast, Shetland recorded the coldest temperatures in the UK with highs of 9C. 

    Scottish temperatures have already been well above the 12-13C average for this time of year with highs of 23C recorded in Oban on Wednesday. 

  10. Damien Hoyland: Scotland wing joins Sevens squad for Paris event

    Edinburgh wing Damien Hoyland will warm up for Scotland's summer tour of Japan by playing for Scotland's Sevens side in Paris this weekend.

    The 22-year-old, named on Monday in Vern Cotter's squad for the two-Test trip next month, has finished his domestic season with the capital side.

    Hoyland won his sole senior cap as a replacement in a pre-World Cup warm-up test in Italy last August.

  11. MP accuses David Cameron of 'championing' ineffective mass surveillance

    Gavin Newlands, the SNP member for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, accused the prime minister of u-turning on a promise to protect civil liberties with his Investigatory Powers Bill.

    However, Mr Cameron defended the bill, saying it helped protect the country against terrorism and organised crime.
