    The fire in west Belfast continues to bring us dramatic pictures. Here's a shot of the fire taken from Newtownbreda and, below that, Colin Williams sent us an aerial shot showing a huge plume of smoke over south Belfast.

  4. Hickey family meets Irish foreign minister

    The family of Pat Hickey, the former Olympic Council of Ireland president arrested in Brazil over alleged illegal ticket sales, has met Irish Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan.

    In a statement from the family's solicitors, it said the family had been "reassured that the minister and Department of Foreign Affairs are doing everything in their power to provide all necessary consular support to Mr Hickey". 

  5. Decision to be taken tomorrow on Exminster terrorism searches

    A decision on whether to extend searches in Exminster as part of an investigation into Northern Ireland-related terrorism will be made tomorrow, say police in Devon and Cornwall.


    The searches have been continuing since the arrest of Ciarán Maxwell, a Royal Marine born in Larne, last week in connection with arms dumps found earlier this year.

  7. 'Petrifying' ordeal on transatlantic flight hit by turbulence

    "30 years of flying, I've been through a little bit of turbulence, I've been through some scary things... but I've never through anything this petrifying". The words of a passenger who was on board the flight that made an emergency landing in Shannon.

  8. West Belfast fire: Latest from the scene

    BBC News NI reporter Catherine Morrison tells Evening Extra that the fire in west Belfast is producing a huge plume of smoke and that onlookers have been moved back from the area.

    The fire has broken out at a recycling centre. "This fire could go on for some time," she says. "A firefighter here tells me he attended a similar fire that went on for three days."

  9. Irish cabinet adjourn meeting over Apple until Friday

    The Irish cabinet has adjourned its meeting over the European Commission's ruling that Ireland granted Apple undue tax benefits of up to €13bn (£11bn).


    "Following the discussion, it was agreed to adjourn the meeting to allow further time to reflect on the issues and to clarify a number of legal and technical issues," said an Irish government office statement. 

  10. Rubbish fire in west Belfast

    A fire has broken out at a business premises in the Blackstaff Road area of west Belfast.

    The fire service says seven engines are at the scene where a large quantity of rubbish is on a fire. The rubbish is creating a large plume of smoke that can be seen from the M1 and Boucher Road. 

  11. Search for missing Derry man called off until Thursday

    A search for a man off the coast of County Donegal has been called off because of bad weather.


    Anthony Griffith, 59, from Londonderry, was last seen on Monday. The search off the Isle of Doagh will resume at 11:00 on Thursday.

  12. Classic cars set on fire in Larne arson attack

    Police are appealing for information after six classic cars were set on fire at a business in Larne early this morning.


    Police received a report of the attack in the Brustin Brae Road area at about 07:00.

  13. Caterpillar refuse to comment on jobs speculation

    Caterpillar have refused to comment over speculation the company is set to make a significant announcement regarding jobs.


    A spokesperson said: "Caterpillar is committed to communicating regularly and directly with our employees about the business environment and any resulting changes."

  14. Donaldson inquest adjourned because of criminal investigation

    The inquest into the death of Denis Donaldon has been adjourned for two years - the coroner in County Donegal says that the adjournment is because criminal proceedings have begun against an individual.

    Supt Michael Finan said Gardai were now applying for a further adjournment until the criminal proceedings were finally concluded.

  15. Rugby: Ulster sign prop on short-term deal

    Ulster have moved to ease their injury problems in the front-row by signing Georgia prop Anton Peikrishvili until 19 December.

    Ulster are currently without three props - Wiehahn Herbst, Ricky Lutton and Jonny Simpson - because of injury.The 28-year-old Georgian has played in France since 2007 and has 23 international caps. 

  16. Funeral details for family found dead in County Cavan

    A joint funeral for five members of the Hawe family, who were found dead on Monday in an apparent murder-suicide, will take place this Saturday.

  17. Denis Donaldson inquest adjourned for two years

    An inquest into the death of former Sinn Féin official Denis Donaldson has been adjourned for two years.

    He was shot dead in Donegal more than 10 years ago. The Real IRA claimed it was responsible. Months before he was killed, he confessed to spying for Special Branch and MI5.
