  4. Scarborough chalet demolition 'on track'

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

The demolition of several listed beach chalets in Scarborough's South Bay is expected to be completed before the summer season begins, the council says.

    Chalets

The chalets, which sit below the Clock Cafe, have been cordoned off following the collapse of retaining wall in March this year which left them leaning at a 45-degree angle.

In November, the chalets collapsed further and the council's chief executive, Jim Dillon, took the decision to move forward with the demolition rather than waiting for listed building consent, which was not expected to be granted until May.

    Chalets

Now, in an update to be given to councillors at their full authority meeting, the cabinet member for major projects, Councillor Mike Cockerill, has informed his fellow members that it's likely the chalets will be down by summer.

  5. Sale of York's Bootham Park Hospital site to go ahead

York's former Bootham Park Hospital is definitely to be sold off after an attempt to keep it in public ownership failed, it's been confirmed.

    Bootham Park Hospital

City of York Council and NHS bosses had applied to pause the sale of the former psychiatric hospital site so the potential for future developments could be explored.

They hoped the seven hectare site would remain in NHS or public ownership so it could be an asset to the city.

But it has been confirmed that the Department of Health and Social Care plans to go ahead with the sale of the 18th Century building which was shut in 2015 after inspectors found it was unsafe for patients and staff.

In a joint statement, City of York Council and the local NHS said they were "very disappointed" at the decision.

They say they want to "work with any bidders to understand the importance of the site and the opportunities it could offer the people of York".
