  2. Knaresborough woman nominated for road safety work

    A woman from Knaresborough who has had to use a wheelchair since being paralysed when she was hit by a van 10 years ago has been nominated for two awards for the work she does giving road safety advice to schools.

    Lauren Doherty has been nominated for volunteer of the year and outstanding contribution at the Yorkshire Choice Awards, which are being held in April.

    She said: "Even if one person didn't have to experience what I've been through, it would be really worthwhile."

  3. Sewer takes a battering from dumped Yorkshire puddings

    These photographs show dumped Yorkshire puddings clogging up a sewer.

    Anglian Water shared the photographs of the sewer in Ipswich on Twitter.

  4. Remote control helicopters stolen from house in York

    A pair of remote control helicopters have been stolen from a house in York.

    A vase was also taken from the property on Swale Avenue along with four women's coats during the robbery which happened at about 23:55 last night.

    North Yorkshire Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

  6. Research finds 'association' between e-cigs and smoking

    Research at a Yorkshire medical school has found a link between e-cigarettes and people taking up smoking.

    The study, by researchers at Hull York Medical School, showed that some young people vape before trying real cigarettes.

    But Professor Kamran Siddiqi, who co-led the study, says the evidence needs to be treated with caution.

    He said: "Clearly there's some association between use of e-cigarettes and taking up smoking behaviour.

    "I don't think we have evidence to say it was e-cigarettes which led them to take up smoking, we still need to be vigilant but I don't think we should be too alarmed."

  7. Police seek owner of car parked near missing man's

    Police searching for a missing North Yorkshire ultra runner want to talk to the owner of a car which was parked near to his.

    Nicholas Harper, 50, from Pickering, was last seen more than a week ago and his car was later found at Cowhouse Wood, near Helmsley.

    Officers want to speak to the owner of a silver estate car which was parked in the same area where the trainee teacher's car was located.

    It'ss thought the car was parked there on the morning of Thursday 7 February, the day Mr Harper went missing, and for a couple of mornings beforehand.

    North Yorkshire Police say: "It may be that the driver has seen or heard something which may assist with the investigation."

  10. Free energy upgrade to help reduce North Yorkshire bills

    Homeowners and renters using inefficient storage heaters, room heaters or fires could get a brand new central heating system installed for free.

    North Yorkshire County Council has secured funding to help people living in Ryedale, Scarborough and Hambleton reduce their energy bills and transform their home's heating.

    To qualify for the funding, each resident must either be in receipt of certain benefits or have a household income below £21,000 and live in a property that wastes energy.

    Ryedale District Council, Scarborough Borough Council and Hambleton District Council have also provided match funding to support installations in their areas.

  11. Octogenarians who met in Scarborough care home get engaged

    Two octogenarians in Scarborough have proved you're never too old to find love after getting engaged.

    Anne-Marie Sullivan, 84, and Gordon Smith, 86, met at the care home where they live after they sat at the same table for lunch one day and struck up a conversation.

    Staff at Scarborough Hall held a party for the couple yesterday.

    The couple say: "Finding one another later in life makes us appreciate the time we have to spend together is precious."

  12. Brexit means 'uncertainty' for Sausage World plans

    There are question marks around the future of a new tourist attraction, called Sausage World, as the company behind the plans said it would no longer be able to apply for European Union grants after Brexit.

    Food producer Heck have already received the go-ahead for a £4m expansion of its factory, in Kirklington, near Bedale, North Yorkshire, which would include a new visitor centre.

    It had hoped EU grants would be able to help support the development.

    The company currently employs 120 staff, of which 85 are from Europe, now hopes to raise money for the scheme by expanding into Ireland and selling vegan sausages to Australia.

    Jamie Keeble, co-founder of Heck Food, said: "After losing out on EU funding because of Brexit we will have to fund our sausage world out of cash so are ramping up our international exports."

    He said Brexit was "creating huge uncertainty" and the support for small food companies "has all disappeared down the Brexit plug hole".

  13. Hotel and apartment block planned for York

    Plans for a 143-bedroom hotel and a six-storey apartment block on Piccadilly in York could get the green light at a meeting next week.

    Under the proposals, the Infinity Motorcycles shop and car park opposite Spark York would be demolished and a Hampton By Hilton hotel would be built.

    The neighbouring eight-storey Ryedale House is currently being converted into a luxury apartment block.

    The report says the hotel plans have been altered in response to concerns about the height of the building and proposals for a rooftop terrace have been scrapped.

    The apartments would overlook the River Foss and the Eye of York.

  15. Yorkshire school pupils to stage climate change protest

    Students from schools across Yorkshire will protest later to highlight the issue of climate change.

    Young people in Leeds, Sheffield and York will take part in demonstrations, calling for more to be done to tackle the issue.

    The action is part of a much wider global movement, known as Schools 4 Climate Action.

    It began with 15-year-old Swede Greta Thunberg skipping class to sit outside government buildings in September, accusing her country of not following the Paris Climate Agreement.

    If you're making a journey on the rails in Yorkshire this morning, services seem to be running pretty much to time at the moment.

    There are issues between Meadowhall and Barnsley because of trespassers on the line.

    Disruption is expected to last until about 08:45 this morning, according to operators.
