  2. CCTV appeal after Selby street attack

    Police have released CCTV images of two people they want to speak to after a man and woman needed hospital treatment following an assault in Selby last month:

    The attack happened at the James Street taxi rank in the town centre at about 01:25 on Sunday 22 July.

    A woman was pushed to the ground and a man was punched in the face and required hospital treatment for facial injuries.

  3. Selby pub break-in suspect images revealed

    CCTV images of two men suspected of breaking into a North Yorkshire pub have been released by police.

    Officers in Selby are trying to identify the pair following a break-in overnight at the Cross Keys Inn at Hillam on 4 June.

    Anyone with information about who the pictured men are is being asked to contact police.

  4. Scarborough roads to close for 'neon' motorcycle rally

    Roads around Scarborough seafront are set to close for a nighttime motorcycle rally featuring bikes covered in neon lights, it's been confirmed.

    The annual Goldwing Light Parade will come through the North Yorkshire seaside town on the evening of Saturday 8 September.

    Foreshore, Sandside, Marine Drive, Royal Albert Drive and Eastborough - from Globe Street to the seafront - will be closed from 19:30 until 22:00 to allow the parade to take place.

    The popular community event will feature large Honda motorcycles decked out in brightly coloured lights.

  5. A64 due to reopen this evening after gas leak

    Part of a major route between Leeds and York will reopen this evening after several days of disruption.

    The A64 has been closed near J44 of the A1(M) since Tuesday because of a gas leak.

    James Knox from Northern Gas Networks said: "We’re sorry for the inconvenience this road closure has caused for motorists. It was essential for the safe repair of the pipes underground.

    "There is some reinstatement work needed on the site next week which may require a further road closure."

  7. Fatal owl shootings case 'a warning' - Police

    A gamekeeper from Cumbria has been told to pay £1,200 for shooting dead two short-eared owls, following a North Yorkshire Police investigation.

    Timothy Cowin, 44, admitted killing the protected birds on an estate in Cumbria, an area managed for driven grouse shooting on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.

    Cowin, from Sedbergh, appeared at Lancaster Magistrates Court where he was told to pay £1,210 in fines and costs.

    North Yorkshire Police's Rural Taskforce worked with the RSPB charity on the investigation into the shooting which took place in April 2017.

    North Yorkshire Police say the case should serve as "a warning" to others who commit wildlife crime.

  8. Won't get fooled: Conmen targeted by Yorkshire Water

    A new scheme to root out conmen who claim to represent Yorkshire Water but are actually out to rob people has been launched by the utility company.

    It comes after several people were targeted by bogus officials in Allerton, near Bradford.

    Now Yorkshire Water is urging people to sign up to its free password scheme.

    It works by letting customers set up an "agreed personal password" with them, which the company will use if they call or visit them.

    Yorkshire Water says people should always ask to see a caller's ID, not let them in until they've seen it and then call the company's offices if they are unsure.

  9. Huge Lego exhibition comes to Harrogate this weekend

    A huge exhibition of Lego, with models of mythical creatures and giant animals, is in Harrogate this weekend.

    The Great Brick Adventure, opens today and features a selection of incredible life-sized creations made using the popular plastic toy.

  10. Cost of North Yorkshire garden waste collections may rise

    The cost of garden waste collections could rise by around 40% in some parts of North Yorkshire due to a cost-cutting scheme by the county council.

    The authority wants to cut £900,000 from the £2.2m it pays district and borough councils to process green waste, as it struggles to fund key services.

  12. 'Huge amount of damage' for Towton homeowner after crash

    A North Yorkshire homeowner has been left with a "huge amount of damage to repair" after a driver crashed into his property.

    The car also hit the garage door, wall and a vehicle at the side of the A162 in Towton, near Tadcaster.

    Police shared photographs of the damage on Twitter and say the driver has now been arrested.

  13. A1(M) and A64 sliproad closed to recover crashed lorry

    The link road between the A1(M) northbound and the A64 eastbound has been closed to recover a lorry which has crashed onto the embankment.

    Traffic officers and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews remain on the scene near Bramham Crossroads.

    Highways England says it "will advise once we have indication on duration of closure."

  14. Taxis in Harrogate may cost more as cabbies want fare deal

    Taxi fares in the Harrogate could become some of the most expensive in the country with drivers saying they are currently losing money on short journeys.

    Drivers in Harrogate District want fares to go up to cover the increased cost of insurance, fuel and maintenance.

    Harrogate Borough Council say at this stage "any increase in fares is just a proposal and it would be wrong for us to pre-judge or predict the outcome of the meeting" which will take place next week.

  15. North Yorkshire stately home to use Chinese payment app

    A stately home in North Yorkshire has started using a Chinese app which lets people pay with their mobile phones, to take advantage of its popularity with Asian tourists.

    Castle Howard became famous in the Far East after Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou had his wedding reception there in 2015.

    The tourist attraction will take money from guests using WeChat Pay, which is part of China's popular WeChat social media network, used by more than a billion people.

    Abbigail Ollive said: "It's what our Chinese visitors use, it's kind of the replacement for Facebook, Twitter, the social media platforms we have here, they do everything through WeChat."

  16. Police warn drivers using phones to snap lorry crash

    West Yorkshire Police say they will be in contact with motorists seen using their mobile phones to take photographs and videos of a lorry which crashed onto an embankment where the A1(M) meets the A64.

    On Twitter, the force say it has noted the registration numbers of drivers seen using their phones at the wheel, following the accident near Bramham Crossroads.

    They add: "We will be in contact."

  17. Lorry crashes on A1(M) embankment closing two lanes

    A lorry has crashed onto an embankment where the A1(M) meets the A64, with two lanes closed while emergency services try to recover it.

    Police and fire fighters are in attendance after the lorry left the road near Bramham Crossroads, near Tadcaster.
