  5. Watch: George Osborne aasked about making £320,000 from speeches

    Former chancellor George Osborne was in Newcastle today visiting the constuction site for the £58m urban sciences building at Newcastle University.

    He also met council and business leaders.

    Earlier this week records showed Mr Osborne made more than £320,000 over 31 days for giving speeches.

  6. Free parking in Durham in December

    Durham County Council has announced that throughout December, council-owned car parks will be free after 15:00.

    The free parking applies to all council-run car parks, as well as on-street parking bays in Durham City from 1 December until  31 December.

    Some big names from the world of football have been paying tribute to BBC Newcastle's commentator Mick Lowes as he prepares to hang up his microphone.

    After 25 years covering Newcastle United, he'll commentate on his final match when they take on Blackburn Rovers at St James' Park tomorrow.

    Newcastle United's record goal scorer Alan Shearer told BBC Newcastle: "I think in the media world nowadays there's less trust than there ever has been I think, from players, from managers, from coaches towards the media. 

    "But when Mick's involved, that's the one thing I think you do get and that's why he has so many good contacts in the game, that's why he's so well respected.

    "When I go to football grounds and talk to players who I played with and who I played against, they always ask me 'how's big Mick?' He's known a lot from outside of this area as well."

  12. Watch: D-day veteran honoured shortly before his death

    A 92-year-old D-Day veteran has been honoured by the French in the final hours of his life. 

    Ronald Veitch, from Billingham, risked his life to secure France's liberation during World War Two, and was awarded the Legion of Honour in his hospital bed.

  13. Police appeal after men threatened with meat cleaver, axe and knife

    Northumbria Police are appealing for information after two incidents during which men and a teenager were threatened with weapons in Newcastle. They believe they could be linked.

    The first happened between 18:30 and 19:00 on 23 November when two men aged 19 and 20 were walking on Wood Grove, Scotswood Dene, and were approached by three men armed with a meat cleaver, axe and a knife. 

    The group threatened the two men and stole one of their mobile phones.

    The second incident took place shortly afterwards, between 19:00 and 19:30, when a 14-year-old boy was walking in the underpass near to the McDonalds on West Denton Way, close to the A1.

    A male in a group of three who were nearby picked up some money which the boy had dropped.

    The boy was threatened with a knife and the money was stolen.

  15. Hartlepool funeral director sentenced to 20 years in jail for sexual abuse

    A funeral director who sexually abused five teenage boys has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

    Gerald Martin

    Gerald Martin, 66, abused his victims in public toilets and in his funeral parlour in Hartlepool.

    The abuse began in the 1970s and continued through to the 1990s.

    Martin, 66, and of Valley Close, Hartlepool, had denied all the charges against him but was convicted by a jury in August.

    Middlesbrough FC goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos went into BBC Tees yesterday and while he was there answered a series of quickfire questions.

    He talked about his nickname, the best player he's ever faced and which Boro player partied hardest when the club won promotion back to the Premier League.
