  4. Family tribute following death of father-to-be

    A motorcyclist and father-to be who died in a crash has been described by his family as "caring, loving and funny".

    Brett Appleyard, 24, from Ramsgate died in Stirling Way, after a reported collision with a car at the junction with Conyngham Close around 20:25 BST on Friday 6 October.

    His mother Linda said: "He will always be my beautiful boy and the bestest big brother ever to his sister Casey. To his partner Lottie, who is mum to his unborn child, he was and still is her heart and her world.

    "He was so excited that he was becoming a dad in February and loved his baby so much that he was fit to burst. I’m so happy that he had been with Lottie for the scan that day, as he was beside himself with happiness.

    "Brett was pure energy. He loved to laugh and make others laugh too."

    The family has thanked emergency services, and Kent Police is appealing for information from anybody who witnessed a black Ford Mondeo or a black and white Yamaha motorcycle in the moments leading up to the collision.

  9. Deal in Aslef and Southern rail dispute talks 'could be in weeks'

    After months of disruption for Southern rail passengers, BBC South East understands that a new agreement could be put to members of the train driver union Aslef by their leaders within the next few weeks.

    After talks between Aslef and Southern's parent firm Govia Thameslink (GTR) took place last month, both sides released a statement saying "significant progress" had been made.

    BBC South East understands that the latest negotiations have been centred around two separate issues - pay and driver-controlled operation.

    Southern has been in dispute with Aslef and the RMT union over working practices on driver-controlled operation.

    The Department for Transport said GTR and Aslef talks are ongoing and it hopes their "discussions can bring an end to this dispute".

    The RMT union remains in dispute with the company.

  14. Motorcyclist killed in crash

    A motorcyclist has been killed in a crash in Doddington near Faversham, Kent Police have said.

    His black motorbike crashed with a blue Audi Q5 car on The Street, between the junctions of Church Hill and Chequers Hill at about 07:20 BST.

    The 32-year-old man from Sittingbourne was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The road remains closed and any witnesses have been asked to contact police.

    An investigation has been launched after the death of a patient at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

    The 85-year-old woman died at the hospital on 23 September.

    The trust which runs the hospital, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, and the Care Quality Commission, are investigating.

    The woman’s death is being treated as unexplained.

    Sussex Police are investigating.
