Sussex hospital staff to strike

Stuart Maisner

BBC Live reporter

Cleaners, porters and catering staff at three community hospitals in East Sussex have voted to ballot for strike action over new pay and conditions.

The GMB Union says its members working at the Lewes Victoria, Crowborough War Memorial and Uckfield Community Hospitals could walk out as early as the middle of September.

NHS Property services, who employ the staff, are changing job roles but the union says the changes will mean a pay cut for many.

Road consultation is a 'sham'

Stuart Maisner

BBC Live reporter

A consultation into improvements on the A27 has been dubbed "a sham" by council leaders.

Highways England plans to "increase capacity and reduce congestion" between Worthing and Lancing.

The leaders of both Adur and Worthing councils - Neil Parkin and Dan Humphreys - say the current option on the table will make very little difference to journey times and isn't worth the £69 million cost.

They've called on Highways England to launch a fresh consultation with updated plans.

A27 in West Sussex

Highways England offered the following response:

We think that the targeted series of junction improvements we’re proposing for the A27 in Worthing and Lancing would make a worthwhile improvement to people’s journeys and is the best achievable option within the scope and budget available for the project. The consultation materials include a summary of other options and why they have been discounted.
