Coperforma: NHS Finance Officer before select committee

Ben Weisz

Political reporter, BBC Sussex

Councillors on West Sussex's health select committee don't have any power over the NHS - but they can ask questions of those that do.

Today, they welcomed Alan Beasley from the High Weald, Lewes and Havens CCG - the NHS body that hired beleagured patient transport provider Coperforma.

His answers revealed a few nuggets of interesting information.

Contrary to erroneous reports in the press that Coperforma was "stripped" of the Sussex contract - Coperforma approached the CCG to ask to hand it back, and it took the CCG completely by surprise.

"This was an unforeseen outcome and it required immediate action," said Mr Beasley.

The CCG shares some people's worries that the new provider - the South Central Ambulance Service - might have too much on its plate launching in Sussex and Surrey at the same time. But, said Mr Beasley, "we've received the appropriate level of assurances".

And remember how the NHS spent money paying staff at ambulance firm Docklands when their employers didn't? That money is now going to be clawed back from Coperforma.
