  5. A tough winter ahead?

    Ben Weisz

    Political reporter, BBC Sussex

The maximum you can claim in benefits as a couple or a single parent in Sussex is £384.62 a week.

Some benefits are exempt - but at least 2,472 households across the county will see drops in their weekly income.

There's been a cap since 2013 - but at £500 a week, it didn't really affect many outside London.

Now, Sussex councils warn some will struggle to pay rent - not just those renting privately, but in social housing too. That, in turn, could lead to a rise in homelessness.

The government says that capping benefits does encourage people into work, and that it's unfair for workers on low incomes to earn less than those on benefits.

But councillors I've spoken to are less optimistic. They warn of a tough winter ahead for families in an expensive southern county.
