  6. Council's work to stamp out hate crime under scrutiny

    Work to keep people safe from disability-related hate crimes is to be discussed by West Sussex County Council. 

    The Council’s Environmental and Community Services Select Committee will scrutinise work to tackle hate incidents and hate crimes motivated by disability. 

    In 2015/16 there were 86 referrals to the council-commissioned West Sussex Hate Incident Support Service.

    Southern’s Angie Doll didn’t dodge the question when BBC Sussex’s Neil Pringle asked if she was embarrassed to hear the trials and tribulations of commuters on the first day of yet another RMT strike.

    Mick Lynch from the RMT said he was “sorry” for the disruption faced by commuters.

    And that disruption was compounded by overrunning engineering works this morning.  

    37,000 people commute out of Brighton – that’s a quarter of the city’s workforce.

    Weeks of further strikes on the Southern network will certainly annoy them. But more importantly – it threatens their jobs.
