Sweet success for sugar reduction programme

 An innovative Sussex scheme has won a national award for its work on reducing the sugar content by over 40% in primary school meals.   The West Sussex County Council sugar reduction programme was judged to be in the top three of 300 entries at the annual Public Health England Conference 2016.

West Sussex County Council says daily sugar consumption has been reduced from 16g to 9g. It also said over the school year, the amount of sugar now removed from primary school meals across the county is equal to three double-decker London buses.

Littlehampton man jailed for sex offences against young boys

 A Littlehampton man is starting a seven-year prison sentence after being convicted of sex offences against two young boys.

Robin Hall, 76, was sentenced at Chichester Crown Court after a six-day trial.

He was convicted of three indecent assaults on a boy then aged between 13 and 15, between 1978 and 1980; and of four indecent assaults on a boy then aged between 11 and 14, between 1999 and 2001.

Human chain fights car fire in Battle

People armed with buckets formed a human chain to tackle a fire after a sports car crashed and burst into flames in Battle. 

The Nissan 370Z Nismo came off the road and hit a tree in Harrier Lane at 14:30 BST yesterday.

Members of the public used a garden hose to douse the flames before fire crews arrived. 

A 49-year-old man was flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries, while another man's in a stable condition at the Conquest Hospital in St Leonards.
