  4. Man and dog found dead after armchair fire

    A man and his dog have been found dead in their home several days after his armchair caught fire, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service's said.

    Folly Lane, Cheddleton

    The 77-year-old was discovered dead along with his border collie on Friday at a house on Folly Lane, Cheddleton.

    The fire service said it believed the fire started on Monday 7 October and the man tried to tackle it before being overcome by the smoke.

    The blaze is thought to have been down to his armchair being too near an open fire without any fire guard in between.

  5. Former Thomas Cook stores reopen as Hays Travel

    Almost 140 former Thomas Cook stores have now reopened, Hays Travel says, with more than 1,900 jobs offered to ex Thomas Cook staff.

    Thousands of people lost their jobs when the travel giant collapsed last month, ending 178 years of business. It also left 150,000 tourists stranded and prompted the biggest ever peacetime repatriation by the Civil Aviation Authority.

    In the aftermath, Hays Travel bought all 555 Thomas Cook high street stores and pledged to reopen many of them.

    Stores in Coventry Cannon Park, Stourbridge and Tamworth are among the first 138 to reopen across the UK, with others in the West Midlands expected to follow.

  6. Revamp plans in spotlight after £420k windfall

    The future of an old supermarket site and disused council offices in Staffordshire could soon be clearer after the local authority secured £420,000 from a government fund.

    The old Sainsbury's building on Ryecroft in Newcastle-under-Lyme was demolished five years ago.

    The borough council then moved out of its nearby offices in 2018 and now wants to develop both sites.

    In September, the government said historic shopping centres would benefit from a £95m regeneration fund.

    The council has now revealed it's planning to use the cash to look into potential options for the Ryecroft area and to decide how to safely demolish their old offices.

  7. Cow stuck 'up to its neck in mud' rescued

    A cow's been rescued by firefighters after being stuck up to its neck in "very deep mud".

    They were called to a field in Mobberley, near Tean, Staffordshire, yesterday afternoon.

    Specialist equipment along with a tractor were used to release the cow which was checked by a vet and said to be recovering afterwards.

  9. Majority shareholder agrees to sell stake in Crewe Alex

    Crewe Alexandra football club's majority shareholder has agreed to sell his stake in the club.

    Norman Hassall has held 51% of the shares since 2006, but will now sell them to a group of local business owners and investors.

    The Alex have issued a statement saying the move will mean no single shareholder will own more than 12.5% of shares.

  13. Flood risk warning as heavy rain returns

    Parts of the West Midlands could face flooding as heavy rain moves across the region.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for between 12:00 and midnight.

    The Met Office said the wet weather will move northwards across much of England on Monday, with the heaviest rain forecast for the afternoon and evening.

    Flood alerts have been issued in Warwickshire, Herefordshire and Shropshire.

  15. Broken-down train causing delays

    A broken-down train between Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield is blocking rail lines.

    CrossCountry services out of Birmingham News Street are being affected as well as Virgin Trains between London Euston and Manchester Picadilly.

    Disruption is expected until 10:00 said Network Rail.
