  7. Jobs lost as dairy announces closures

    The dairy firm Arla is closing its cheese packing plant in Malpas and transferring the work to Oswestry.

    The Danish dairy group is also closing a cheddar production unit and creamery in Denbighshire.

    About 150 jobs are likely to be lost as part of the cost-cutting programme.

  8. Heating grants available for city residents

    Grants of up to £10,000 are to be made available to help Stoke-on-Trent residents stay warm in their homes.

    The city council has been awarded £246,000 from the National Grid Warm Homes Fund to help struggling homeowners with costs of things like damp proofing, boiler replacement or repairs.

    Privately rented tenants could get up to £5,000 if their landlord agrees to match-fund the contribution.

    A senior officer who gave evidence at an inquiry into a man's fatal shooting by police in Cheshire "may have committed a criminal offence", the police watchdog has said.

    A report regarding the conduct of Assistant Chief Constable Steven Heywood has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service.

    ACC Heywood authorised the operation in which Anthony Grainger died in 2012.

    No evidence was found against a second officer being investigated.

  10. Closing Warrington & Vale Royal College campus 'a huge loss'

    A Cheshire college has been criticised for a plan to "decommission" a campus six years after spending £10m on brand new buildings.

    Warrington and Vale Royal College said its Hartford campus near Northwich was "seriously under-utilised".

    In a letter, Northwich mayor Janet Myerscough-Illidge said closing "state-of-the-art facilities" built in 2012 would be a "huge loss".

    The college said the plan would ensure it is "financially sustainable".

  11. HS2 railhead will not be moved, campaigners told

    Campaigners have lost their battle to move a HS2 railhead earmarked for land near Stone in Staffordshire to an alternative site.

    Campaigners fear that more than 500 HGVs a day are expected on roads near Stone during the construction of the HS2 railhead.

    Stone Railhead Crisis Group petitioned Parliament to move the railhead and infrastructure maintenance base to an alternative site near Madeley.

  13. Staffordshire County Show prepares to open

    The county show in Staffordshire takes place over the next two days.

    Thousands of people are expected to gather at the showground outside Stafford this Wednesday and Thursday.

    From dancing diggers through the grand main ring - there's lots on offer including a whole lot of delicious locally produced food - gates open from 10:00.

  14. Man covered in blood dies after being found by roadside

    More details have been given by police after a 26-year-old man died after being spotted half naked by a road.

    The man, who has not been named, was seen walking along Turnhurst Road, Packmoor, Stoke-on-Trent, at about 13:35 in a "distressed state" - covered in blood and wearing just a pair of black shorts and socks.

    The man was seen as "acting aggressively towards several people and attempting to get into a number of cars being driven", police said.

    He was stopped by police and taken to hospital by ambulance but later died.

  15. Arrested teenager released over murder

    A teenager arrested over the murder of an 87-year-old man has been released under investigation.

    Arthur "Bob" Gumbley was found on the floor of his home following a violent burglary in Endwood Drive, Sutton Coldfield, on 21 November.

    He died in hospital three weeks later.

    The teenager, from Stoke-on-Trent, was arrested in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in connection with the murder, Staffordshire Police said on Saturday.

  17. Schools trust looks to Northern Ireland for teachers

    An academy trust which operates schools in Leeds, Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent is hoping to recruit teachers in Northern Ireland in a bid to help tackle a shortage of staff in England.

    The Co-op Academies Trust, which operates 12 schools, says there are more newly qualified teachers than jobs in Northern Ireland.

    The trust currently has more than 10,000 students and employs more than 1,000 teachers and support staff - with those numbers set to quadruple by 2022, according to the Co-op.
