  1. New Stafford mayor officially takes up role

    The new mayor of Stafford has been sworn into office.

    Councillor Aidan Godfrey officially took on the new role at the annual mayor making ceremony at the Gatehouse Theatre. 

    His chosen charities are Staffordshire Women's Aid and Community Link Stafford and District.

  2. Football: Stoke miss out on top ten Premier League finish

    Stoke City defender Eric Pieters says the squad is disappointed they will miss out on a top-10 finish for the first time in four seasons.

    The Potters lost 4-1 to Arsenal on Saturday, leaving them on 41 points - one short of their worse ever season in the Premier league, with one match to go.

    It's the first time they've failed to achieve a ninth placed finish since manager Mark Hughes took over in 2013.

  3. Armed police incident 'over' in Norton

    Staffordshire Police say an incident in Norton has ended "safely" after armed officers responded to an incident at a flat in Pointon Grove.

    Several roads in the area have been shut since about 03:00.

    A man has been detained for treatment and assessment under the Mental Capacity Act following police negotiations.

  4. Mental health trust working 'around the clock' after software issues

    The South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which runs mental health and learning disability services, was affected by the worldwide cyber-attack on Friday.

    Workers say they couldn't access computer records or landline phones, which use internet access.

    The trust says it's now in the process of bringing services back to normal.

  5. Cyber attack: Hospitals a 'big target' for hackers

    The only hospital trust in the East Midlands to be affected by Friday's cyber attack was Nottingham University Hospitals - some of its phone lines and email systems were made unavailable. 

    Several others shut down computers as a precautionary measure - including Derby, Burton and Sherwood Forest. 

    Leicester's hospitals posted this on Twitter followed by a message of thanks to their information officer for keeping patient data safe.

  6. Local surgeries and hospitals 'recovering' from NHS cyber-attack

    Patients are being advised to turn up for hospital appointments today unless contacted and told otherwise.

    It's after NHS services across the country fell victim to a cyber-attack on Friday

    Royal Stoke University Hospital, the County Hospital in Stafford and Leighton Hospital in Crewe all faced disruption over the weekend due to a malware attack which prevented computer users from accessing their terminals unless they paid a ransom.

  7. Football: Leek Town chase new manager

    Leek Town are targeting Neil Baker as their new manager, BBC Radio Stoke understands.

    It's after the Staffordshire Moorlands non-league club last night announced they have parted company with the managerial duo of Anthony Danylyk and Paul Donnelly. 

    Baker is currently the head of recruitment at Crewe Alexandra but is keen to make a return to management. 

  8. Staffordshire Hoard named among top finds

    The Staffordshire Hoard, the largest discovery of Anglo Saxon gold ever found in Britain, is up for a public vote. 

    Treasure 20 is an online poll celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Treasure Act - the law requiring people to report their finds.

    Voting ends at midnight tonight.

  9. House fire in Goldenhill

    Firefighters have been tackling a fire at a bungalow in Goldenhill, Stoke-on-Trent 

    They were called to Albany Street shortly before 21:00 last night. 

    It's believed the fire started accidently after a frying pan was left on the hob and the home owner fell asleep.

    They were woken by their smoke alarm and managed to escape, the fire service said.

  10. Evha Jannath: Post-mortem due after Drayton Manor park death

    A post-mortem examination is expected to take place after the death of an 11-year-old at Drayton Manor theme park last Tuesday. 

    Evha Jannath, from Leicester, was on a school trip on Tuesday when she fell from a boat on the Splash Canyon ride.  

    The park reopened over the weekend, following an investigation by police and health and safety officials, but the ride itself and others nearby remained closed.

    Manchester City will bid to win their first ever Women's FA Cup when they meet 2012 winners Birmingham City at Wembley.

    The 2016 league champions are looking to become the first team to hold all of the main three domestic honours at the same time since Arsenal Ladies in 2011.

    Blues knocked out holders Arsenal and 2015 winners Chelsea to make the final, while Manchester City beat Liverpool.

    It will be the first time either side has featured at the national stadium.
