A man has suffered "life-changing injuries" in a serious assault, Staffordshire Police said.
Officers are investigating the assault which happened on Market Lane, Newcastle-under-Lyme at about 01:30 on Sunday.
The 48-year-old victim man was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital where he remains - his condition is described as stable.
A 30-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm.
He has since been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.
Det Sgt John Dowie said: "This was a very serious assault that has left a man hospitalised with horrendous injuries.
"We believe that the victim was drinking in the Foyer nightclub immediately before the assault took place.
"We are also particularly keen to speak to a woman and another man in connection with this incident."
